This part of IEC 60871 is applicable to both capacitor units and capacitor banks intended to be used, particularly, for power-factor correction of a.c. power systems having a rated voltage above 1 000 V and frequencies of 15 Hz to 60 Hz. This part of IEC 60871 also applies to capacitors intended for use in power filter circuits. Additional definitions, requirements and tests for filter capacitors are given in Annex B. Additional requirements for capacitors protected by internal fuses as well as requirements for the internal fuses are given in IEC 60871-4. Requirements for capacitors to be protected by external fuses, as well as requirements for the same, are given in Annex C. This standard does not apply to capacitors of the self-healing metallized dielectric type. The following capacitors are excluded from this part of IEC 60871: – capacitors for inductive heat-generating plants operating at frequencies between 40 Hz and 24 000 Hz (IEC 60110-1); – series capacitors for power systems (see the IEC 60143 series); – capacitors for motor applications and the like (see the IEC 60252 series); – coupling capacitors and capacitor dividers (IEC 60358); – shunt capacitors for a.c. power systems having rated voltage up to and including 1 000 V (see the IEC 60831and IEC 60931 series); – small a.c. capacitors to be used for fluorescent and discharge lamps (IEC 61048 and IEC 61049); – capacitors to be used in power electronic circuits (IEC 61071); – capacitors for microwave ovens (IEC 61270-1); – capacitors for suppression of radio interference; – capacitors intended for use with d.c. voltage superimposed on a.c. voltage. Accessories such as insulators, switches, instrument transformers, external fuses, etc. are in accordance with the relevant IEC standards.

This part of IEC 60143 applies both to capacitor units and capacitor banks intended to be used connected in series with an a.c. transmission or distribution line or circuit forming part of an a.c. power system having a frequency of 15 Hz to 60 Hz. The primary focus of this standard is on transmission application. The series capacitor units and banks are usually intended for high-voltage power systems. This standard is applicable to the complete voltage range. This standard does not apply to capacitors of the self-healing metallized dielectric type. The following capacitors, even if connected in series with a circuit, are excluded from this standard: - capacitors for inductive heat-generating plants (IEC 60110-1); - capacitors for motor applications and the like (IEC 60252-1); - capacitors to be used in power electronics circuits (IEC 61071); - capacitors for discharge lamps (IEC 61048 and IEC 61049). Standard types of accessories such as insulators, switches, instrument transformers, external fuses, etc. should comply with the pertinent IEC standard. NOTE 1 Additional requirements for capacitors to be protected by internal fuses, as well as the requirements for internal fuses, are found in IEC 60143-3. NOTE 2 Additional requirements for capacitors to be protected by external fuses, as well as the requirements for external fuses, are found in Annex A. NOTE 3 A separate standard for series capacitor accessories (spark-gaps, non-linear resistors, discharge reactors, current-limiting damping reactors, damping resistors, circuit-breakers, etc.), IEC 60143-2, was completed in 1994. A separate standard for internal fuses for series capacitors, IEC 60143-3 (formerly IEC 60595), has been revised and was completed in 1998. The object of this standard is: - to formulate uniform rules regarding performance, testing and rating; - to formulate specific safety rules; - to serve as a guide for installation and operation.

This International Standard is applicable to low-voltage a.c. capacitor banks intended to be used for power factor correction purposes, equipped with a built-in switchgear and controlgear apparatus capable of connecting to or disconnecting from the mains part(s) of the bank with the aim to correct its power factor. Low-voltage power factor correction banks if not otherwise indicated hereinafter and where applicable shall comply with the requirements of IEC 60439-1 and those of IEC 60439-3.
