This part of IEC 61969 applies to all fields of mechanical, electromechanical and electronics installations in the outdoor environment. This sectional specification is applicable for the development of detail specifications for cases and cabinets exposed to the outdoor environ-ment on non-weather-protected locations. It specifies the internal and external coordination dimensions and pitches for outdoor enclosures consisting of cases and cabinets. The internal and external coordination dimensions are derived from IEC 60917-2. The internal dimensions will both meet the mounting dimensions of subracks in accordance with IEC 60917-2-2 and IEC 60297-3. The external dimensions, compared to IEC 60917-2, are partly increased in order to meet the design requirements of the outdoor climatic conditions. The purpose of this standard is to ensure compatibility of outdoor enclosures concerning the external and internal interface dimensions.

This part of IEC 61969 gives guidelines for the design of outdoor enclosures and is applicable over a wide field of mechanical, electromechanical and electronic equipment and its installation where a modular design is used. The objective of this standard is to provide an overview of specifications for enclosures focused on requirements for outdoor applications at non-weather-protected locations. These enclosures are considered to contain any equipment and provide protection for the outdoor installed facilities against unwanted environmental impacts (see figure 1). The installed equipment may be, but is not limited to, subracks according to IEC 60917-2-2 or IEC 60297-3.

This part of IEC 61587 specifies mechanical tests, climatic tests and safety aspects for cabinets, racks, subracks and chassis as defined in the detail standards of IEC 60917 and IEC 60297 for indoor and outdoor applications. It applies in whole or part only to the mechanical structures for electronic equipment practices according to IEC 60297 and IEC 60917 and does not apply to electronic equipment or systems. The object of this standard is to ensure physical integrity and environmental performance in cabinets, racks, subracks and chassis, taking into account the need for different levels of performance in different applications. It is intended to give the user a level of confidence in the selection of an equipment practice to meet his specific needs.

This International Standard relates to equipment practices. The modular order is applicable to the main structural dimensions of electronic equipment mounted in various installations where dimensional interfaces have to be considered. It refers to basic design parameters and is not intended to be used for manufacturing tolerances or clearances. In addition, information on interfaces to other technical fields, on technology and advanced design aspects is included. This standard also covers standard terms for parts and assemblies of mechanical structures for electronic equipment. This generic standard gives the definitions of a modular order for mechanical structures of electronic equipment and provides for dimensional compatibility at mechanical interfaces with related engineering applications, e.g. printed boards, components, instrumentation, furniture, rooms, buildings, etc. Furthermore, it supports the introduction and application of the modular order rules considering that: - compatibility of interface dimensions is aimed at the electronic field on the basis of the SI un it met re; - technical and economic advantages can be achieved when using the rules. The terms in this standard should be used in all standards for mechanical structures of electronic equipment and in related technical documents.
