This part of IEC 60079-29 specifies general requirements for construction, testing and performance, and describes the test methods that apply to portable, transportable and fixed apparatus for the detection and measurement of flammable gas or vapour concentrations with air. The apparatus, or parts thereof, are intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (see 3.1.8) and in mines susceptible to firedamp. This standard is also applicable when an apparatus manufacturer makes any claims regarding any special features of construction or superior performance that exceed these minimum requirements. In these cases, all such claims should be verified and the test procedures should be extended or supplemented, where necessary, to verify the performance claimed by the manufacturer. When verifying the superior performance of one criterion, other performance criteria are not required to meet the standards minimum requirements, however, these reduced claimed performance criteria (as confirmed in the manufactures Installation Manual) should also be verified. (e.g. temperature range of 0 °C to 60 °C; 0 °C to 40 °C at ±10 % accuracy and 40 °C to 60 °C at ±15 % (manufacturers claimed accuracy). The additional tests should be agreed between the manufacturer and test laboratory and identified and described in the test report. This standard is applicable to flammable gas detection apparatus intended to provide an indication, alarm or other output function; the purpose of which is to give a warning of a potential explosion hazard and in some cases, to initiate automatic or manual protective action(s). This standard is applicable to apparatus, including the integral sampling systems of aspirated apparatus, intended to be used for commercial, industrial and non-residential safety applications. This standard does not apply to external sampling systems, or to apparatus of laboratory or scientific type, or to apparatus used only for process control purposes. It also does not apply to open path (line of sight) area monitors. For apparatus used for sensing the presence of multiple gases, this standard applies only to the detection of flammable gas or vapour. This standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0. Where a requirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement of IEC 60079-0, the requirement of IEC 60079-29-1 will take precedence.

This part of IEC 60079-29 gives guidance on, and recommended practice for, the selection, installation, safe use and maintenance of electrically operated group II apparatus intended for use in industrial and commercial safety applications for the detection and measurement of flammable gases complying with the requirements of IEC 60079-29-1. This standard is applicable for oxygen measurement for the purpose of inertisation where explosion protection is provided by the exclusion of oxygen instead of measuring the combustible gases or vapours present. This standard is a compilation of practical knowledge to assist the user, and applies to apparatus, instruments and systems that indicate the presence of a flammable or potentially explosive mixture of gas or vapour with air by using an electrical signal from a gas sensor to produce a meter reading, to activate a visual or audible pre-set alarm or other device, or any combination of these. Such apparatus may be used as a means of reducing the risk whenever there is the possibility of a risk to life or property specifically due to the accumulation of a combustible gas-air mixture, by providing such warnings. It may also be used to initiate specific safety precautions (e.g. plant shutdown, evacuation, fire extinguishing procedures). This standard is applicable to all new permanent installations and, where reasonably practicable, to existing permanent installations. It is also applicable to temporary installations, whether new or existing. Similarly it is applicable to the safe use of portable or transportable apparatus, irrespective of the age or complexity of such apparatus. Since much modern apparatus of this type also includes oxygen deficiency detection and/or specific toxic gas sensors, some additional guidance is given for these topics.

This British Standard specifies requirements for the construction, testing and performance of electronic portable and transportable apparatus for the detection and measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) in indoor ambient air, which includes air entering mechanical ventilation systems in dwellings, commercial premises and industrial premises. This standard covers equipment to indicate up to typically 20 000 ppm (2%) CO2 in air. NOTE 1 The CO2 measuring capabilities of indoor air quality apparatus are covered by this standard. NOTE 2 The measurement capabilities of electronic portable and transportable apparatus that are additional to the measurement of CO2 are not covered in this standard. Other standards that cover these additional measurement capabilities include BS EN 50379 for electronic portable combustion gas analysers and BS EN 45544 for toxic gas detection apparatus having an alarm function for alerting an operator to an unsafe workplace atmosphere.

These requirements cover toxic and combustible gas and vapor detectors and sensors intended to be portable or employed in indoor or outdoor locations in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. A gas detector and/or sensor and/or vapor detector, as covered by these requirements, consists of an assembly of electrical components coupled with a sensing means inside a chamber, or by separate components to detect toxic and/or combustible gases or vapors. The detector includes provision for the connection to a source of power and signaling circuits. These requirements cover the following types of detectors: a) Detectors intended for monitoring the environment and detectors intended for open area protection and for connection to a compatible power supply or control unit for operation as part of gas detection or emergency signaling systems; b) Detectors intended solely for control of ventilation or shut off devices such as fans or control valves; c) Detectors intended for both the above applications; d) Sensors and sensing circuits intended for use with or in gas detectors, alarms or gas detection circuits within fuel cell systems; e) Portable gas detectors; f) Multi-gas gas detectors; g) Multi-gas sensors and h) Equipment intended for use in hazardous locations. Note, the equipment must comply with the applicable hazardous location requirements prior to evaluation to UL 2075. 1.3 These requirements also cover all remote accessories that are intended to be connected to a gas or vapor detector and/or sensor. 1.4 This standard does not cover the following: a) Control units to which the detectors are intended to be connected that are covered by the Standard for Control Units for Fire-Protective Signaling Systems, UL 864; b) Control units to which the detectors are intended to be connected that are covered by the Standard for General Purpose Signaling Devices and Systems, UL 2017; c) Self-contained single and multiple station carbon monoxide alarms or residential combustible gas detectors, not intended for connection to a system control unit, that are covered by the Standard for Single and Multiple Station Carbon Monoxide Alarms, UL 2034 or Residential Gas Detectors, UL 1484. 1.5 Users of these requirements will additionally need to ensure that influencing factors not addressed in this standard for the end product installation, such as mechanical movement, field placement of conductive material, and product damage, will not affect the system for insulation coordination or performance operation. Examples are the deformation of the enclosure, movement of the fittings for conduit or armored cable, or the improper installation of field wiring.
