In response to comments received during the first public review (September 2007), this second public review draft makes independent substantive changes to the first PR draft. The standard as a whole is being revised to improve its alignment with related ASHRAE and ARI standards, especially ASHRAE Standard 37. Sections 6.6 through 6.13 from Standard 116-1995 (RA 2005) have been deleted and replaced by sections that refer the user to corresponding sections in Standard 37-2005. In addition, the proposed revision incorporates mandatory language throughout, adds the ASHRAE map of climate zones for US locations & updates references.

This European Standard is applicable to the design, construction and installing of refrigerating systems including piping, components and materials and including ancillary equipment directly associated with such systems. It also specifies requirements for testing, commissioning, marking and documentation. In case the heat transfer fluid is not gaseous at atmospheric pressure, the requirements for circuits for heat transfer fluids are excluded except for any safety devices associated with the refrigerating system. It is not applicable to refrigerating systems with air or water as refrigerant and does not cover the requirements for equipment to be used in a potentially explosive atmosphere. The following ancillary equipment includes: fan and fan motor; -- electrical motor and transmission for open compressor systems. This European Standard specifies the requirements relating to stationary and mobile refrigerating systems of all sizes, including heat pumps. Systems using refrigerants other than those listed in Annex E of EN 378-1:2008 are not covered by this stan- dard as long as a safety class is not assigned. Basic safety requirements for refrigerating systems as defined in EN 378-1 are applicable for this standard. Basic requirements for the installation site as defined in EN 378-3 apply. This European Standard is not applicable to refrigeration systems and heat pumps which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN.

This European Standard specifies the requirements relating to safety of persons and property (but not goods in storage) and the local and global environment for: a) stationary and mobile refrigerating systems of all sizes, including heat pumps; b) secondary cooling or heating systems; c) location of these refrigerating systems. NOTE 1 For secondary heating or cooling systems charged with any refrigerants listed in Annex E the charge limitations of part 1 (Annex C) apply. For refrigerating systems with a limited mass of refrigerant only some of the parts and clauses are applicable. The exceptions are defined in the scope and the clauses of each part of EN 378. This European Standard is not applicable to refrigerating systems with air or water as refrigerant. Systems using refrigerants other than those listed in Annex E are not covered by this European Standard as long as a safety class is not assigned. NOTE 2 For the safety classification of refrigerant fluids not included in Annex E, see Annex F. This European Standard covers the hazards mentioned in the introduction. This European Standard is applicable to new refrigerating systems and modification of existing refrigerating systems in case the type of refrigerant changed or pressure vessels are replaced. The part dealing with maintenance, repair, operation, recovery, reuse and disposal also applies to existing systems. Parties responsible for existing refrigerating systems should consider the safety and environmental aspects of this European Standard and implement the more stringent requirements so far as they are reasonably practicable. Directive 94/9/EC concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres can be applicable to the type of machine or equipment covered by this European Standard. The present standard is not intended to provide means of complying with the essential health and safety requirements of Directive 94/9/EC.

This standard prescribes a small-scale laboratory test method for measuring the contaminant removal efficiency of loose granular sorptive media used in gas-phase air-cleaning equipment as installed (in a test apparatus) in an airstream and challenged with test gases under steady-state conditions. This test is conducted at elevated gas challenge concentrations (relative to ventilation applications) and therefore should be used to compare media rather than directly predict performance in any particular application. This standard defines methods of calculating and reporting results obtained from the test data and establishes a results reporting system that can be applied to loose granular media covered by this standard. This standard does not apply to a. bonded carbon panels, beaded activated carbon, carbon cloths, absorbent-loaded nonwovens, dry-process carbon composites, or similar products or b. particulate removal equipment.

The scope of EN 378-1:2008 is applicable. This European Standard specifies requirements for safety and environmental aspects in relation to operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery, reuse and disposal of all types of refriger- ant, refrigerant oil, heat transfer medium, refrigerating system and part thereof. These requirements are intended to minimise risks of injury to persons and damage to property and the envi- ronment resulting from improper handling of the refrigerants or from contaminants leading to system break- down and resultant emission of the refrigerant. Certain clauses and subclauses of this European Standard are not applicable to unit systems self contained systems and systems built on site which operate with charges of refrigerant up to 3 kg of refrigerant. These subclauses are 4.1.1,4.1.2, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1.1 to 5.1.4, 5.2, 5.3.1, 5.3.3 and 6.6. For these systems, the necessary maintenance has to be described in the instruction manual and should repairs be necessary, contact the nearest authorised repair service centre.

This proposed revision of the standard includes updates and revisions to all parts of the standard, including its title, purpose, and scope. It updates definitions, adds modulating diffusers, redefines airflow sensor performance testing, and adds a method to determine the power factor. New appendices contain some material that was formerly in the body of the standard and some new reference material.

This European Standard specifies requirements and testing for ratings and performance of air handling units as a whole. It also specifies requirements, recommendations, classification, and testing of specific components and sections of air handling units. For many components and sections it refers to component standards, but it also specifies restrictions or applications of standards developed for stand alone components. This standard is applicable both to standardised designs, which may be in a range of sizes having common construction concepts, and also to custom-design units. It also applies both to air handling units, which are completely prefabricated, and to units which are built up on site. Generally the units within the scope of this standard include at least a fan, a heat exchanger and an air filter. This standard is not applicable to the following: a) air conditioning units serving a limited area in a building, such as fan coil units; b) units for residential buildings; c) units producing ventilation air mainly for a manufacturing process.
