This European Standard describes a test method for determining the intrinsic characteristics of sound diffraction of added devices installed on the top of railway noise barriers. The test method prescribes measurements of the sound pressure level at several reference points near the top edge of a noise barrier with and without the added device installed on its top. The intrinsic effectiveness of the added device is calculated as the difference between the measured values with and without the added devices, correcting for any change in height. In other words, the method described here gives the acoustic benefit of changing the shape and materials of the top edge over a simple barrier of the same height. This is an intrinsic characteristic of the added device, provided that the source and receiver positions are standardized. In practice, when the added device is placed over an existing barrier, it raises the height and this provides additional screening, depending on the source and receiver positions; this additional screening is not considered in this European Standard. The test method is intended for the following applications:- preliminary qualification, outdoors or indoors, of added devices to be installed on noise barriers; - determination of the sound diffraction index difference of added devices in actual use; - comparison of design specifications of an added device with actual performance data after the completion of the construction work; - verification of the long term performance of added devices (with a repeated application of the method); - interactive design process of new products, including the formulation of installation manuals. The test method can be applied both in situ and on samples purposely built to be tested using the method described here. Results are expressed as a function of frequency, in one-third octave bands between 100 Hz and 5 kHz. If it is not possible to get valid measurements results over the whole frequency range indicated, the results shall be given in the restricted frequency range and the reasons for the restriction(s) shall be clearly reported. A single-number rating is calculated from frequency data.

This standard specifies the requirements for the draw gear and screw coupling for the end of rolling stock that has to couple with other rolling stock (freight wagons, locomotives, passenger vehicles ...). This standard covers the functionality, construction, interfaces and testing including pass/fail criteria for draw gear and screw coupling. The standard describes three categories of classification of draw gear and screw coupling, (1 MN, 1,2 MN and 1,5 MN). This part of the EN 13230 series defines technical criteria and control procedures which need to be satisfied by the constituent materials and the finished concrete sleepers and bearers, i.e.: precast concrete sleepers, twin-block reinforced sleepers, bearers for switches and crossings, and special elements for railway tracks. The main requirement of concrete sleepers and bearers is the transmission of vertical, lateral and longitudinal loads from the rails to the ballast or other support. In use, they are also exposed to frost damage and to moisture, which can result in detrimental chemical reactions within the sleeper. In this standard mechanical tests are defined which provide assurance of the capability of sleepers or bearers to resist repetitive loading and provide sufficient durability. In addition, controls are placed on manufacturing processes and tests to ensure that the concrete will not suffer degradation in service through chemical reaction and frost damage.

To ensure safety and interoperability, this Standard gives: the limits for in-service and off-vehicle wheelsets; the operations to be carried out for which the specific values (and/or criteria) remain to be defined in the maintenance plan. This European Standard applies to wheelsets and axle boxes complying with the following European Standards: EN 13103, EN 13104; EN 13260, EN 13261, EN 13262; EN 13979-1; EN 13715; EN 13749. that comprise: the axle fitted with wheels of diameters greater than or equal to 330 mm; axle boxes with bearings and grease. This European Standard is also applicable to wheelsets: fitted with brake discs, final drive, transmission or noise-damping systems, as appropriate; not complying with the above European Standards, but complying with the international requirements in force, for example in UIC leaflets, before the approval of these standards; with tyred wheels; with resilient wheels. For equipment not covered by Directive 2008/57/EC, this European Standard may be applied, noting that different values may be used. All dimensions in this Standard are in millimetres (mm). It is necessary to describe in a specific document the tasks to be performed in order to maintain wheelsets within the limits defined therein. NOTE The specific values and criteria are defined in an appropriate maintenance plan.

This Technical Specification specifies methods for the determination of insertion loss of outdoor noise barriers intended to shield railway noise. It specifies detailed procedures for in situ measurement of barrier insertion loss including microphone positions, source conditions and acoustic environments of the measurement sites. This Technical Specification allows one to measure the insertion loss of a given noise barrier at a given site including given meteorological conditions. It does not make it possible to compare insertion loss values of an equivalent barrier at a different site. It can be used for comparing insertion loss values of different types of barriers at the same site under given meteorological conditions by the "direct method". This Technical Specification gives a method for determining insertion loss: a) from the level difference before and after the installation of noise barriers (the "direct method"); b) when the direct method is not applicable, because a barrier has already been installed, using an "indirect method" to estimate the sound pressure levels before installation of the barrier by measurement at another site which has been judged to be equivalent. For equivalent sites, a close match is required in source characteristics, microphone locations, terrain profiles ground surface characteristics, surrounding artificial structures and meteorological conditions. This Technical Specification prescribes principles for ensuring that sufficiently equivalent conditions are maintained between "before" and "after" cases to permit certain, reliable and repeatable determination of barrier insertion loss. This Technical Specification does not cover the determination of the intrinsic acoustic characteristics of the barrier, for example the sound insulation index and the sound absorption coefficient. The equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level and one-third-octave band sound pressure level are used as noise descriptors. This Technical Specification can be used for routine determination of barrier performance or for engineering or diagnostic evaluation. It can be used in situations where the barrier is to be installed or has already been installed.

This European Standard describes a test method for measuring a quantity representative of the intrinsic characteristics of airborne sound insulation for railway noise barriers: the sound insulation index. The test method is intended for the following applications:- determination of the intrinsic characteristics of airborne sound insulation of noise barriers to be installed along railways, to be measured either on typical installations alongside railways or on a relevant sample section; - determination of the in situ intrinsic characteristics of airborne sound insulation of noise barriers in actual use; - comparison of design specifications with actual performance data after the completion of the construction work; - verification of the long term performance of noise barriers (with a repeated application of the method); - interactive design process of new products, including the formulation of installation manuals. The test method is not intended for the following applications; - determination of the intrinsic characteristics of airborne sound insulation of noise barriers to be installed in reverberant conditions, e. g. inside tunnels or deep trenches or under covers. Results are expressed as a function of frequency in one-third octave bands, where possible, between 100 Hz and 5 kHz. If it is not possible to get valid measurement results over the whole frequency range indicated, the results will be given in a restricted frequency range and the reasons for the restriction(s) will be clearly reported. All noise reducing devices different from noise barriers and related devices acting on airborne sound propagation, e. g. devices for attenuation of ground borne vibration and on board devices are out of the scope of this European Standard.
