The purpose of this document is to provide dimensions of clearance envelopes for various types of six-bolt regular-duty, eight-bolt heavy-duty, and side- and rear-mounted truck transmission power takeoffs. these envelopes are applicable to the clearance required immediately adjacent to the power takeoff openings on truck transmissions. Clearance envelopes are provided for the purpose of documenting current practice. It must be recognized that many current designs do not provide these clearances in all orientations and variations. New transmission and power takeoff designs should attempt to adhere to these envelopes where practical, but they should not be construed to be design restrictive; ultimately, the actual power takeoff clearance must be established for each application. In order to provide realistic envelope sizes, there are seven basic types of side-mounted P.T.O. envelopes and rear-mounted envelopes as shown. All envelopes shown are basic and can be reversed for output to the front or rear of the vehicle. On Types II, III, IV, and VI, output shaft locations can additionally be reversed from that shown to the opposite side of the P.T.O. opening centerline. Driveline envelopes, front or rear, above or below centerline of opening as required, must be a cylinder of the minimum diameter shown and fall within the 15 degree maximum half-cone extending vertically up and down and horizontally outward from the driveline cone apex, for a distance equivalent to that required to bring the P.T.O. driveline beyond points of interference so that auxiliary equipment can be driven. Clearance should be provided on six-bolt openings on mechanical transmissions for Types I, II, and III with Types I and II being a minimum requirement. Clearance should be provided on automatic transmissions for Types IV and VI depending on six- or eight-bolt p.T.O. openings. Mechanical transmissions with eight-bolt openings should have type V and VI clearances provided. Direct mount hydraulic pump clearance envelopes are included as an option, and are commonly used with Types II, IV, and VI P.T.O. envelopes. If pump clearance is restricted it should be evaluated on a specific basis. If specific pump sizes are not available, direct mount pump clearance envelopes should be used as shown.

The accompanying mounting and gear locations are applicable for all general installations of power take-off on the transmission gear box of motor trucks and tractors where the size of the transmission permits. The heavy-duty type opening can be adapted to the regular-duty type by the use of an adapter with 6.35 mm (0.25 in) flange thickness with appropriate bolt pattern and thread engagement.

The procedure covers the estimation of the total retardation capability available to a specific vehicle from: a) natural retardation (rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, etc); b) engine drag; and c) engine, integral automatic transmission, driveline or trailer-axle retarders. It assumes that foundations brakes are not used for maintaining speed on long mountain descents. Retardation is rated in terms of the maximum grades on which stable control speeds can be maintained for each gear over the range of highway speeds appropriate to that gear. For each gear, the calculation procedure determines maximum grades for at least four values of control speed ranging from the vehicle velocity corresponding to full load governed engine rpm, to the vehicle velocity corresponding to the engine rpm at minimum (idle) speed. in addition, the calculation procedure provides information on the total retarding power available for each gear. This procedure provides a uniform method for calculating and reporting the steady state control speed maintainable by either engine, integral automatic transmission, driveline, or trailer-axle retarders employed by heavy trucks and buses operating on downgrades. It provides a practical method of predicting retarder performance in a specified vehicle installation using data describing retarder performance characteristics and other vehicle design variables. It is intended to assist in the proper selection of a retarder by matching stated retarder performance capabilities with particular vehicle functioning requirements.

Since the torque converter and fluid coupling have become commonly used components of automatic transmissions in industry, the SAE appointed a committee to standardize terminology, test procedure, data recording, design symbols, and so forth, in this field. The following committee recommendations will facilitate a clear understanding for engineering discussions, comparisons, and the preparation of technical papers. The recommended usages represent the predominating practice or the acceptable practice. Where agreement is not complete, alternates have been included for clarification. EXAMPLE: two systems of blade angle designations are described. Consequently when a blade angle is specified, the system should be designated. This SAE Recommended Practice deals only with the physical parts and dimensions and does not attempt to standardize the design considerations, such as the actual fluid flow angle resulting from the physical blade shape.
