This Code provides procedures for the accurate testing of steam turbines. It is recommended for use in conducting acceptance test of steam turbines and any other situation in which performance levels must be determined with minimum uncertainty. It may be used for testing of steam turbines operating either with a significant amount of superheat in the initial steam (typically fossil-fueled units) or predominantly within the moisture region (typically nuclear- fueled units). This Code contains rules and procedures for the conduct and reporting of steam turbine testing, including mandatory requirements for pretest arrangements, instruments to be employed, their application and methods of measurement, testing techniques, and methods of calculation of test results. The performance parameters which may be determined from a Code test include: (a) heat rate, (b) generator output, (c) steam flow, (d) steam rate, (e) feedwater flow. It also contains procedures and techniques required to determine enthalpy values within the moisture region and modifications necessary to permit testing within the restrictions of radiological safety requirements in nuclear plants.

This Code may be used for testing steam turbines in combined cycles with or without supplementary firing and in cogeneration applications. Within these categories of combined and cogeneration cycles, this Code is applicable to condensing and noncondensing steam turbines, to reheat and nonreheat steam turbines, and to induction/ extraction steam turbines. The variety of cycles presents challenges in writing a code that addresses all issues encountered for all cycle configurations. ASME PTC 6 is the appropriate code for testing steam turbines in nuclear and fossil- fired regenerative feedwater heater cycles. This Code is applicable only to turbines in cycles in which steam is the working fluid. This Code provides procedures for testing and calculating turbine-generator output performance corrected to reference conditions as a measure of overall turbine performance. This Code contains rules and procedures for the conduct and reporting of steam turbine testing, including requirements for pretest arrangements, testing techniques, instrumentation, methods of measurement, and methods for calculating test results and uncertainty.

This technical specification describes the importance of the chemical characteristics of steam supplied to steam turbines and the need to prevent corrosion and deposition in steam space, in order to minimize the risk of turbine corrosion failures or loss of efficiency or output. The significance of relevant chemical parameters, mostly related to impurity levels, is discussed in terms of types of plant and chemistry operating regimes. This specification is applicable to turbines of all electrical output rating and any exhaust condition, i.e. condensing or back pressure. However, the range of application in terms of output rating or steam pressure is dictated by economic factors such as the relative cost of monitoring equipment and turbine plant. It is designed for new plant, but may be adapted for use on existing plant.

This part of IEC 60953, also called "retrofit code" (RC), establishes a supplementary retrofit code for thermal verification tests of retrofitted steam turbines. The rules given in this standard follow the guidance given in IEC 60953-2, hereinafter called the RS but contain amendments and supplements regarding guarantees and verification of the guarantees by thermal acceptance tests on retrofitted steam turbines. General principles for the preparation, performance, evaluation, comparison with guaranteed values and the determination of the measurement uncertainties of verification tests are given in this standard. This standard is applicable only when the retrofit involves some hardware change in the steam turbine equipment. Conversely, any modification on the cycle or any retrofit of other equipment of the power plant (e.g. boiler, feedwater heaters, etc.) is not covered by this standard.
