The minimum performance values in this SAE Recommended Practice are applicable to vehicles with brake systems having typical service pressure ranges 0 to 16.6 MPa (0 to 2400 psi) hydraulic or 0 to 945 kPa (0 to 135 psi) air only. SAE J880 not only provides for determining maximum brake rating power capability, also permits verification of any desired or arbitrary level such as the requirement established herein. The determining criteria for deciding brake rating power capability are: a. cold brake stopping ability; b. fade as a result of brake power absorption; c. hot brake stopping ability following brake power absorption; d. brake system stability following brake power absorption; and e. functional and structural integrity of brake system following test. The purpose of this document is to establish a minimum Brake Rating Power (BRP) level for commercial vehicles tested in accordance with SAE J880.

This SAE Recommended Practice provides the test procedure and instructions for air braked single unit trucks, buses, and combination vehicles. It also provides recommendations for: Instrumentation and equipment, Vehicle preparation, and calculating distribution of brake force. This procedure provides a method to determine the brake force distribution and threshold pressures for trucks and buses with a GVWR greater than 4536 kg (10 000 lb). Other equipment and procedures could be used to determine approximate relative work or energy being absorbed by a vehicle's brakes. A. "performance based brake tester" can determine low pressure/low speed torques of different brakes. A "temperature/thermal balance" can show relative temperatures of brakes, thus indicating approximate energy absorbed.

This International Standard defines the methods for testing and assessing the corrosion effects on painted backing plates used on disc brakes and painted brake shoes used on drum brakes. The methods and assessment criteria indicated in this International Standard are part of the specification/validation phases of the product and the series production monitoring from ISO 15484. The test procedures indicated include only laboratory performance testing, whether static or cyclic. Field surveys or proving grounds test protocols are beyond the scope of this International Standard.

This Recommended Practice adheres to standard industry practice of using English units for specifying valve characteristics. This International Standard specifies open-loop test methods for determining the effect of braking on the course-holding and directional behaviour of heavy vehicles or heavy vehicle combinations when braking is accomplished using - the service-brake system, or - the retarder or engine brake only.
