These guidelines have been written to provide process information regarding the hot stamp method of marking wire identification directly on aerospace wires and cables. This document is not intended to encourage the use of hot stamp marking or to endorse the related process. This method of marking wire identification is prohibited on any aerospace vehicle wiring that is required to conform to the provisions of AS 50881. Methods which do not deform wire or cable insulation, such as Ink Jet, Dot Matrix or UV Laser marking are encouraged as a means of minimizing the possibility of insulation damage, particularly on insulation constructions of less than 0.010 in wall thickness. AIR 5575 provides a comprehensive report on the issue of wire damage that can occur when hot stamp wire marking process is employed. In recognition that the present use of hot stamp wire marking is widespread and may continue for an extended period, the guidelines provided in this document are intended to provide process control information necessary to minimize the possibility of insulation damage.

This specification covers the requirements for electrodeposited silver on other metals, usually with a nickel strike between the basis metal and the silver. Silver plating has been used typically to provide a bearing surface and to prevent galling or seizing of surfaces of parts made of corrosion-resistant steels and of parts made of other metals not deleteriously affected by high-temperature baking, but usage is not limited to such applications. Silver plating is the most commonly used coating for turbine engine fasteners providing an even degree of lubrication up to a maximum service temperature of about 1200 °F (650 °C).

This specification covers the requirements for embrittlement relief (baking) of heat treated steel parts to remove hydrogen infused during plating and other chemical processing (e.g., stripping, chemical milling, pickling, and etching). This specification is applicable to parts made from carbon, low-alloy, and martensitic stainless steel heat treated to a minimum strength of 180 ksi (1241 MPa) or higher heat treated to a minimum hardness of 40 HRC or equivalent, or harder. It is also applicable to threaded fasteners made from carbon, low-alloy, or martensitic stainless steels heat treated to a minimum strength of 150 ksi (1034 MPa) or 34 HRC or equivalent, parts made from high strength precipitation hardening stainless steels other than A-286, and steel parts which have been case hardened (carburized, nitrided, nitrocarburized, or carbonitrided).
