This part of EN 14483 describes a test method for the determination of resistance to attack in closed systems by acid and neutral liquids, as well as by actual process mixes, the given corrosive agent generally applied at a temperature above its boiling point. It is also applicable to the determination of resistance to mildly alkaline fluids provided that the material of the test equipment is suitable for such a test (see also 4.1.2). This European Standard primarily applies to the testing of enamels designed for use in chemical process technology.

This part of EN 14483 describes a test method for the determination of vitreous and porcelain enamelled articles to resistance to attack by alkaline liquids at temperatures between 25 ℃ and 95 ℃. The apparatus used is a cylindrical vessel in which only one enamelled specimen is tested. NOTE 1 The test method was initially set up for determination of the resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamels to a hot sodium hydroxide solution. Within the scope of this standard the resistance of other alkaline liquids can be tested. NOTE 2 This part of EN 14483, which uses a cylindrical vessel is generally used for tests carried out on vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings for the chemical industry.

This document describes 2 test methods of high voltage testing: — Test A is used to detect and locate defects in vitreous and porcelain enamels; — Test B is used to detect and locate defects and weak spots in vitreous and porcelain enamels. The tests are performed using DC, pulsed DC, or AC high voltage. The tests are applicable to dry surfaces of enamel coatings. In the case of moist surfaces, care should be taken to ensure that the locating of any defects is correctly performed. Since test voltages depend on the coating thickness, the test method, especially with test A, may not be suitable for test specimens for which the coating thickness varies to a large extent. NOTE This document extends the range of application of the test given in ISO 2746, which is restricted to coating thicknesses of minimum 660 μm.

The document establishes a system for cataloging defects at chemical enamels and glass-lined apparatus and represents the defects by figures. It covers using of uniform terminology regarding designation and characterisation of these defects. It is only restricted to sensible defects and does not completely consider all types of defects may be occured. The defects are not evaluated, the clasification performed only serves job rotation.#,,#

This practice is important because producers of chromogenic glazings cannot wait for real-time in-service use to assess the product lifetime. Thus, a procedure is needed to estimate failure times based on accelerated weathering and related factors and tests. This practice does not provide guidance for how to follow the steps outlined as follows, but it provides as much information as is practical in an ASTM practice.1.1 This practice is intended to provide guidance to architects, specifiers, manufacturers, and other parties who have an interest in evaluating the service life of chromogenic glazings.1.2 This practice is intended to cover the main factors about service life that must be considered when evaluating glazings for performance until the failure time is reached. However, users of this practice must be aware that other factors must be considered, such as the effect of the interaction of materials, the use of the glazings, and to the environment in which a chromogenic glazing is exposed over its service life. Users of this practice are specifically cautioned to be aware that failure of the plastic polyurethane thermal barrier in an aluminum window containing a chromogenic blazing can cause a spreading or outward rotation of the glazing leges, called "hinging" or "clamming," which reduces the edge pressure on an insulated glazing (IG) unit, causing edge seal failure of the IG unit and allowing water to enter the IG unit and the glazing pocket.1.3 The test methods referenced herein are laboratory tests conducted under specified conditions. These test methods are intended to simulate and, in some cases, to also accelerate actual in-service use of the chromogenic glazings. Results from these test methods cannot be used to predict the performance with time of units in the field unless actual corresponding field tests have been conducted and appropriate analyses have been conducted to show performance can be predicted from accelerated aging test methods.

This International Standard specifies a test method for the determination of the scratch resistance of enamel finishes. The method is based on ISO 1518:1992, Paints and varnishes—Scratch test, but is performed at significantly higher forces. The value of the scratch resistance that is obtained is a measure of the durability of porcelain enamel finishes when scratched by sharp objects under high forces. The value should not be confused with scratch hardness, a quantity that is measured by the procedure described in EN 101:1991, Ceramic tiles—Determination of scratch hardness of surface according to Mohs.

The measurement of adherence in porcelain enamel systems, such as ground coat, ground coat/cover coat, and direct-on cover-coat enamels, is an important procedure for monitoring process variables in metal preparation, enamel application thickness, steel selection, and enamel selection, as well as assuring the ultimate quality of the finished product.1.1 The scope of this test method is:1.1.1 To determine quantitatively the amount of enamel remaining after the porcelain enamel coating specimen has been deformed;1.1.2 To standardize the deformation parameters for testing adherence of porcelain enamel to sheet metal; and,1.1.3 To provide a quantitative adherence rating scale for comparison to reference standards.1.2 This adherence test method is applicable to porcelain enamel coatings on substrates from 18 to 24 gauge (0.0478 to 0.025 in. or from 1.214 to 0.654 mm). This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This British Standard specifies a method of test for the determination of the self-cleaning properties of vitreous enamels used for coating the surfaces of cooking, roasting, grilling and baking devices. NOTE The self-cleaning process operates by the capacity of the coating first to absorb oil or fat in droplet form, and then to volatilize and decompose the oil. It is not applicable to "pyrolytic" or "easy to clean" (ETC) enamel coatings.
