The company was founded in 1997 and is situated in Goettingen, a famous university town.

The founder and president of ALPHALAS - Prof. Dr. Krassimir Stankov - has more than 35 years of experience in the development of lasers and laser systems. His deep knowledge in the fields of quantum electronics, optics and nonlinear optics is based on his academic background and many years of leading research at the University of Sofia and the Max-Planck-Institute in Goettingen.

Prof. Dr. Stankov is the inventor of a fundamental method and a device for generating short laser pulses in modelocked lasers, the "nonlinear mirror" or "Stankov's mirror". This method is patented and exclusively used in the PICOPOWER™ series modelocked lasers produced by ALPHALAS, offering high output power for material processing, laser television, and research.
