Scope

This standard specifies the measurement procedure for the extinction ratio of connectors with polarization-maintaining fiber pigtails. In the experiment, the measurement process is limited to one of the most common cases, that is, approximately linearly polarized light propagates in the polarization-maintaining fiber. The term "extinction ratio" here refers to the ratio of light propagating in two orthogonal polarization axes in an optical fiber, and may be more properly defined as "polarization crosstalk". "Extinction ratio" is a general term. This procedure is designed to be used in a special device in the manufacturing process, so the composition of the test device is described in more detail. It must be noted that other test setups capable of direct testing may be used in a suitably equipped optical laboratory, in which case additional test procedures may be required. It should be noted that this test procedure is not designed for long-term continuous testing, especially in single-mode fibers where polarization alignment shifts may occur. Therefore, repeated testing is more important than continuous testing for long-term testing of devices.
