This standard applies to porcelain-jacketed and composite-jacketed metal oxide surge arresters with internal series gaps designed for the limitation of overvoltages in AC power systems. This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules for surge arresters with internal series gaps (hereinafter referred to as arresters) with rated voltages up to and including 52 kV. The arresters of the following types and ratings are currently under study and are not covered by this standard. This standard cannot be addressed until more information on each issue is obtained. - Surge arresters with series gaps for rated voltages greater than 52kV; - Surge arresters with external gaps for all rated voltages; - Surge arresters with parallel gaps for all rated voltages; - Line discharge arresters for classes 2, 3, 4 and 5.
