The main object of this part of ISO 9276 is to provide the mathematical background for the characterization of a classification process. This part of ISO 9276 is not limited to an application in particle size analysis, the same procedure may be used for the characterization of a technical classification process (e.g. air classification, centrifugal classification) or a separation process (e.g. gas or hydrocyclones). In clause 3 the characterization of a classification process is described under the presupposition that the density distribution curves describing the feed material and the fractions, as well as the overall mass balance, are free from errors. In clause 4 the influence of systematic errors on the efficiency of a classification process is described. The effect of stochastic errors in the characterization of a classification process is described in annex A.

The object of this part of ISO 9276 is to provide the relevant equations for the calculation of average particle sizes or average particle diameters and moments from a given particle size distribution. It is assumed that the size distribution is available as a histogram. It is nevertheless also possible to apply the same mathematical treatment if the particle size distribution is represented by an analytical function. It is furthermore assumed in this part of ISO 9276 that the particle size x of a particle of any other shape may also be represented by the diameter of an equivalent sphere, e.g. a sphere having the same volume as the particle concerned.

This International Standard was developed to help particle size analysts make good dispersions from powder/liquid combinations with which they are not experienced. It provides procedures for — wetting a powder into a liquid; — deagglomerating the wetted clumps; — determining if solution composition can be adjusted to prevent reagglomeration; — selecting dispersing agents to prevent reagglomeration; — evaluating the stability of the dispersion against reagglomeration. This International Standard is applicable to particles ranging in size from approximately 0,05 to 100 urn. It provides a series of questions on the nature of the powder and liquid involved. The answers are used with charts that guide the user to generic dispersing agents that are likely to be suitable for dispersing the powder in the liquid. This International Standard applies only to the preparation of simple, dilute dispersions (less than 1 % by volume solids) for particle size analysis. It does not deal with the formulation of complex and commercial mixtures highly loaded with solids, such as paints, inks, pharmaceuticals, herbicides and composite plastics.
