This part of ISO 7240 specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for line-type smoke detectors for use in fire detection systems installed in buildings. The detectors consist of at least a transmitter and a receiver and can include reflector(s), for the detection of smoke by the attenuation and/or changes in attenuation of an optical beam. This part of ISO 7240 does not cover ? line-type smoke detectors designed to operate with separations between opposed components of less than 1 m; ? line-type smoke detectors whose optical path length is defined or adjusted by an integral mechanical connection; ? line-type smoke detectors with special characteristics, which cannot be assessed by the test methods in this part of ISO 7240. NOTE The term “optical” is used to describe that part of the electromagnetic spectrum produced by the transmitter to which the receiver is responsive; this is not restricted to visible wavelengths.

This European Standard specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for input/output devices connected to a transmission path of a fire detection and fire alarm system, used to receive and/or transmit electrical signals to or from the transmission path, necessary for the operation of the fire detection and fire alarm system and/or fire protection system. An input/output device may be a physically separate device or its function may be integrated into another device in which case this European Standard may be used to assess this function. Control and indicating equipment, and ancillary control and indicating equipment (e.g. repeater panels and fire brigade panels) are not covered by this European Standard.

These requirements cover air duct smoke detectors intended for indoor use within or protruding into a duct, or mounted in a housing with sampling tubes extending into or traversing a duct. Air duct smoke detectors are intended to be installed in ducts where the maximum air temperature inside the duct does not exceed 100鳩 (38鳦), nor does the minimum temperature become less than 32鳩 (0鳦).

This European Standard is applicable to fixed gas detection systems for the detection and measurement of flammable or toxic1) gases or vapours or oxygen. This European Standard supplements the requirements of the European Standards for electrical apparatus for the detection and measurement of flammable gases, vapours (e.g. EN 61779 or EN 50241), toxic gases (e.g. EN 45544) or oxygen (e.g. EN 50104). NOTE 1 These European Standards will be mentioned in the text as "metrological standards". NOTE 2 The examples above show the state of the standardisation for industrial applications at the time of publishing this European Standard. There may be other metrological standards covering other application fields, for which this standard is also applicable. NOTE 3 For fixed apparatus used for safety applications with a SIL requirement up to 1 and for portable apparatus the European Standard EN 50271 may be applied instead of this European Standard. Applying the above mentioned metrological standards will ensure the measuring performance is adequate in normal operation of a gas detection system. Additionally the requirements of this European Standard address the functional safety of gas detection systems and encompass criteria for reliability, fault tolerance and avoidance of systematic faults. This European Standard will lead to the characterisation of the gas detection system by a SIL-capability and related hardware failure rate representing a hierarchical order of safety levels. This will allow the user to incorporate the gas detection system into an overall safety system according to the safety integrity levels of EN 61508 or the categories of EN ISO 13849-1 (see Annex B). This European Standard is a product standard which is based on EN 61508 and includes additional requirements of EN ISO 13849-1. It covers part of the phase 9 ?realisation? of the overall safety lifecycle defined in EN 61508-1. This European Standard is applicable for gas detection systems, which may consist of the following functional units: ? gas-sampling; ? sensor; ? signal transmission; ? input to control unit; ? signal processing in control unit; ? output from control unit. This European Standard does not specify requirements for the installation and maintenance of gas detection systems. It also does not specify the physical positioning of sensors.. This European Standard does not specify which SIL-capability is sufficient for which application. NOTE 4 The SIL-capability required for an application will be specified by the user (see Annexes A and B).

This part of ISO 7240 provides a set of general guidelines and definitions to be used in describing the fire detection and alarm system equipment, tests and requirements in the other parts of ISO 7240. The components that a fire detection and alarm system can have are shown in Figure 1. Item C of Figure 1 can be replaced by a sound system for emergency purposes, the components of which are shown in Figure 2. Fire detectors can be self-contained: these are devices containing within one housing all the components, except possibly the energy source, necessary for detection of fire and giving an audible alarm. NOTE Inter-connected smoke alarms complying with ISO 12239 and not connected to control and indicating equipment do not form a fire detection and alarm system as defined in this part of ISO 7240.

This part of ISO 7240 specifies the requirements, test methods and performance criteria for manual call points in fire detection and alarm systems in and around buildings (see ISO 7240-1). It takes into account indoor and outdoor conditions, the appearance and operation of the manual call points for type A "direct operation" and type B "indirect operation" and covers those which are simple mechanical switches, those which are fitted with simple electronic components (e.g. resistors, diodes) and those which contain active electronic components and which work with the control and indicating equipment for signalling and identifying, for example, an address or location. This part of ISO 7240 does not cover manual call points for special applications, for example manual call points that are intrinsically safe or for use in hazardous conditions, if such applications require additional or other requirements or tests than those given in this standard.

This document includes additional requirements for smoke alarms, which are also suitable for use in leisure accommodation vehicles. For the testing of other types of smoke alarms, or smoke alarms working on different principles, this document should only be used for guidance. Smoke alarms with special features, such as radio interlinking or special characteristics and developed for specific risks, are not covered by this document. This document allows, although it does not require, the inclusion within the smoke alarm of facilities for interconnection with other similar smoke alarms and/or accessories, and for alarm silencing. Where such facilities are included, this document specifies applicable requirements. This document does not cover devices intended for incorporation in systems using separate control and indicating equipment. NOTE Certain types of smoke alarms contain radioactive materials. The national requirements for radiation protection differ from country to country and they are not specified in this document. Such smoke alarms should, however, comply with the applicable national requirements.
