This International Standard specifies open-loop test methods for determining the transient response behaviour of road vehicles. It is applicable to passenger cars, as defined in ISO 3833, and to light trucks. NOTE The open-loop manoeuvres specified in this International Standard are not representative of normal driving conditions, but are nevertheless useful for obtaining measures of vehicle transient behaviour in response to several specific types of steering input under closely controlled test conditions. For measurements of steady-state properties, see ISO 4138.

This International Standard provides the specifications and procedures for using the H-point machine (HPM)1) to audit vehicle seating positions. The HPM is a physical tool used to establish key reference points and measurements in a vehicle. The H-point design tool (HPD) is a simplified computer-aided design (CAD)2) version of the HPM, which can be used in conjunction with the HPM to take the optional measurements specified in this International Standard, or used independently during product design. These H-point devices provide a method for reliable layout and measurement of occupant seating compartments or seats. This International Standard specifies the procedures for installing the H-point machine (HPM) and using the HPM to audit (verify) key reference points and measurements in a vehicle. The devices are intended for application at designated seating positions. They are not to be construed as tools that measure or indicate occupant capabilities or comfort. They are not intended for use in defining or assessing temporary seating, such as folding jump seats.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes uniform cold weather test procedures and performance requirements for engine coolant type heating systems of bus that are all vehicles designed to transport 10 or more passengers. The intent is to provide a test that will ensure acceptable comfort for bus occupants. It is limited to a test that can be conducted on uniform test equipment in commercially available laboratory facilities. Required test equipment, facilities, and definitions are included. There are two options for producing hot coolant in this recommended practice. Testing using these two approaches on the same vehicle will not necessarily provide identical results. Many vehicle models are offered with optional engines, and each engine has varying coolant temperatures and flow rates. If the test is being conducted to compare the performance of one heater design to another heater design, then the external coolant source approach (Test A) will yield the most comparable results. If the test is being conducted to validate the heater installation on a specific vehicle model with a specific engine, then using the engine to heat the coolant (Test B) will be more appropriate. Defrosting and defogging procedures and requirements are established by SAE J381 which is hereby included by reference. This document will be reviewed and revised as required with advancements in technology and changes in environmental laws.

This International Standard specifies test methods for determining the transient response behaviour of heavy commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicle combinations, buses and articulated buses, as defined in ISO 3833 for trucks and trailers above 3,5 t and buses above 5 t maximum weight, and in UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) and EC vehicle classification, categories M3, N2, N3, O3 and O4. NOTE The open-loop manoeuvres specified in this International Standard are not representative of real driving conditions, but are nevertheless useful for obtaining measures of vehicle transient behaviour — particularly with respect to that which the driver experiences — in response to several specific types of steering input under closely controlled test conditions. For combinations where the response of the last vehicle unit is of importance, see ISO 14791.

This International Standard specifies a tilt-table test method for estimating the steady-state rollover threshold of a heavy commercial vehicle or bus, i.e. the maximum lateral acceleration that the test vehicle could sustain in steady-state turning without rolling over. It is applicable to complete roll units/combinations of roll-coupled vehicle units — e.g. single-unit vehicles, tractor-semitrailer combinations, articulated buses, full trailers, B-train combinations — of commercial vehicles, commercial vehicle combinations, buses or articulated buses as defined in ISO 3833, and under Categories M3, N2, N3, O3 and O4 of ECE and EC vehicle regulations (trucks and trailers with maximum weights above 3,5 t and buses and articulated buses with maximum weights above 5 t). It does not cover transient, vibratory or dynamic rollover situations; nor does it consider the influences of dynamic stability control systems. Furthermore, the quality of the estimate of the steady-state rollover threshold provided by the test method decreases as the tilt angle required to produce rollover increases. Even so, the results for heavy vehicles with high rollover thresholds can be used for comparing their relative steadystate roll stability. NOTE For further limitations of the specified test method, see Annex B.

This SAE Standard defines the safety and performance requirements for Low Speed Vehicles ("LSV"). The safety specifications in this document apply to any vehicle with a minimum of 4-wheels, a maximum level ground speed of more than 32 km/h (20 mph) but not more than 40 km/h (25 mph), and a maximum gross vehicle weight of 1361 kg (3000 lb), that is intended for operating on designated roadways where permitted by law. The purpose of this document is to promote saftey in the design, manufacture, maintenance and operation of LSVs. Regulatory Authorities desiring to formulate safety rules and regulations may use this Standard as a guide. This document is also intended for voluntary use by others associated with manufacturing or utilizing LSVs.

This recommended practice provides a procedure for measuring and documenting the aerodynamic performance in a fullscale wind tunnel of passenger vehicles, i.e., mass-produced cars and light-duty trucks intended primarily for individual consumers. Testing or numerical modeling of pre-production and/or reduced-scale models is outside the scope of this document. Aerodynamic development procedures, i.e., methods to improve or optimize aerodynamic performance, are also excluded. It is well-known that aerodynamic performance results depend significantly on vehicle content and loading, as well as the wind tunnel itself (type, scale, and simulation qualities of the wind tunnel). Publication of non-standard test results causes unnecessary additional development work and incorrect perception of a vehicle?s anticipated aerodynamic performance by government, academia, and the general public. The intent of this document is to promote uniformity and traceability of published aerodynamic performance data acquired in a wind tunnel, thereby enhancing the public reputation and credibility of the aerodynamics discipline in the total vehicle development process. Measurement of the aerodynamic performance according to this recommended practice requires a full-scale wind tunnel test on a production-ready, full-scale vehicle according to specifications for vehicle loading, content, and wind tunnel conditions. The measurement and resulting documentation for a particular vehicle shall be reported only by the company that intends to produce the vehicle. Whenever there is an opportunity for interpretation of the document, a good faith effort shall be made to obtain the vehicle?s typical in-service performance and avoid finding the best possible performance under the best possible circumstances. Use of and compliance with this recommended practice is voluntary; however, it is mandatory for those advertising or otherwise publishing aerodynamic performance as ?measured according to SAE J2881?. Conversely, any advertised or otherwise published result carrying this or a substantially similar designation must have the necessary documentation accepted by and on file with the SAE in accordance with the procedures defined in this recommended practice. Appendices B and C contain the necessary submittal documents for compliance with this recommended practice. When a submittal is made, the chairman of the Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Committee (or his/her designee) shall review the submittal for proper completion according to the requirements herein, but without consideration of the technical merit of the claimed performance. After the chairman?s review, SAE will maintain an electronic database of all submittals. The database shall be available only to members of the Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Committee. Any RVAC member who retrieves information from the database shall do so with the understanding that the information is to be considered confidential within his or her company.

This SAE Recommended Practice provides instructions and test procedures for air braked vehicles including but not limited to trucks, truck-tractors, trailers, dollies, and buses used on highways but does not include off-highway vehicles. This document provides a method of determining the air reservoir capacity of highway type vehicles using compressed air to actuate or transmit actuation power to the foundation brakes. Air reservoir capacity is the ability to provide adequate brake pressure after a number of brake applications.
