The purpose of this document is to define design, construction, operational, and maintenance requirements for hydrogenfuel storage and handling systems in on-road vehicles.Performance-based requirements for verification of design prototype and production hydrogen storage and handlingsystems are also defined in this document. Complementary test protocols (for use in type approval or self-certification) toqualify designs (and/or production) as meeting the specified performance requirements are described.Crashworthiness of hydrogen storage and handling systems is beyond the scope of this document. SAE J2578 includesrequirements relating to crashworthiness and vehicle integration for fuel cell vehicles. It defines recommended practicesrelated to the integration of hydrogen storage and handling systems, fuel cell system, and electrical systems into theoverall Fuel Cell Vehicle.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes uniform procedures for testing fuel cell and hybrid fuel cell electric vehicles, excluding low speed vehicles, designed primarily for operation on the public streets, roads and highways. The procedure addresses those vehicles under test using compressed hydrogen gas supplied by an off-board source or stored and supplied as a compressed gas onboard. This practice provides standard tests that will allow for determination of fuel consumption and range based on the US Federal Emission Test Procedures, using the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) and the Highway Fuel Economy Driving Schedule (HFEDS). Chassis dynamometer test procedures are specified in this document to eliminate the test-to-test variations inherent with track testing, and to adhere to standard industry practice for fuel consumption and range testing. Communication between vehicle manufacturer and the governing authority is essential when starting official manufacturer in-house and official government confirmatory testing that incorporates this practice.

This Technical Specification applies to the communication data link between external charger and electric road vehicle for the charging procedure, using the most common communication link. This Part 2 applies to communication data link between the off-board charging system with direct current and electric road vehicles. The aspects covered are the physical layer, the data link layer and the communication applicative layer. This Technical Specification does not cover communication between dedicated off-board charger and their electric vehicle. Annex A gives an example of normal operation.

This document describes a test procedure for rating peak power of the Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) used in a combustion engine Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV). Other types of vehicles with non fossil fuel primary engines, such as fuel cells, are not intended to use this test procedure. The purpose of this document is to provide a test procedure to determine RESS peak power so that a vehicle's ratio of RESS peak power rating to the sum of the Internal Combustion Engine power rating and the RESS peak power rating can be established. Because of the vehicle-specific nature of the RESS control and environment, this test is designed to calculate the RESS peak power for a specific vehicle. As a result, the same RESS used in a different vehicle must be retested to determine its peak power rating in the new HEV environment.
