This European Standard specifies the general performance criteria and test procedures for portable automated measuring systems (P-AMS) used for periodic measurements of stationary source emissions. It applies to the performance testing of P-AMS based on measurement techniques specified by the standard reference method (SRM) or an alternative method (AM). Performance testing is based on the general performance criteria and test procedures specified in this European Standard and on the specific requirements specified for the SRM or AM. This includes testing of the applicability and correct implementation of the QA/QC procedures specified for the SRM or AM. This European Standard supports the requirements of particular EU Directives.

5.1 This test method is intended for use by those in the waste management industries for the determination of apparent specific gravity and bulk density of waste. 5.2 The apparent specific gravity and bulk density determined by this test method can be used for the conversion of measured volumes to weights. 5.3 The apparent specific gravity and bulk density, when correlated with other properties, can be used to indicate the character of the waste. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of apparent specific gravity and bulk density in a waste sample. For the purpose of this test method, the property to be measured is classified into three groups based on material type: 1.1.1 Group A—Free-flowing liquids; apparent specific gravity (ASG), 1.1.2 Group B—Granules, powders, and water-reactive liquids, solids, or sludges; bulk density (BD), and 1.1.3 Group C—Bulk solids (such as gravel, paper, or wood, etc.); apparent specific gravity (ASG). 1.2 This test method is designed and intended as a screening test to complement the more sophisticated quantitative analytical techniques that may be used to determine specific gravity. This test method offers to the user the option and the ability to screen waste for apparent specific gravity or bulk density when the more sophisticated techniques are not available and the total waste composition is unknown. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 A knowledge of the inorganic composition of a waste is often required for the selection of appropriate waste disposal practices. Solid waste may exist in a variety of forms and contain a range of organic and inorganic constituents. This practice describes a digestion procedure which dissolves many of the toxic inorganic constituents and produces a solution suitable for determination of total recoverable contents by such techniques as atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy, and so forth. The relatively large sample size aids representative sampling of heterogenous wastes. The relatively small dilution factor allows lower detection limits than most other sample digestion methods. Volatile metals, such as lead and mercury, are not lost during this digestion procedure, however organo-lead and organo-mercury may not be completely digested. Hydride-forming elements, such as arsenic and selenium, may be partially lost. Samples with total metal contents greater than 58201;% may give low results. The analyst is responsible for determining whether this practice is applicable to the solid waste being tested. 1.1 This practice describes the partial digestion of solid waste using nitric acid for the subsequent determination of the total recoverable content of inorganic constituents. 1.2 This practice is to be used when the concentrations of total recoverable elements are to be determined from a waste sample. Total recoverable elements are often not equivalent to total elemental content, because of the solubility of the speciated forms of the element in the sample matrix. Recovery from refractory sample matrices, such as soils, is usually significantly less than total concentrations of the elements present. Note 1: This practice has been used successfully for oily sludges and a municipal digested sludge standard [Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sample No. 397]. The practice may be applicable to some elements not listed above, such as arsenic, barium, selenium, cobalt, magnesium, and calcium. Refractory elements such as silicon, silver, and titanium, as well as organo-mercury, are not solubilized by this practice. 1.3 This practice has been divided into two methods, A and B, with Method A utilizing an electric hot plate and Method B utilizing an electric digestion block. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This European Standard specifies a method for quantitative determination of seven polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCB-28, PCB-52, PCB-101, PCB-118, PCB-138, PCB-153 and PCB-180) in solid waste using high-resolution gas chromatography with electron capture or mass spectrometric detection. The basic content of this standard is identical to that of the Horizontal PCB-standard and is therefore also applicable to soil, sludge and treated bio-waste. The detection and the quantification limits in this method are dependent on sample intake, the level of interferences as well as instrumental limitations. Under the conditions specified in this standard, minimum amounts of individual PCB congeners equal or above 0,01 mg/kg dry matter can typically be determined with no interferences present. NOTE For the analysis of PCB in insulating liquids, petroleum products, used oils and aqueous samples is referred to EN 61619, EN 12766-1 and EN ISO 6468 respectively. The method may be applied to the analysis of other PCB congeners not specified in the scope, but its suitability should be proven by proper in-house validation experiments.

This European Standard is applicable for the preparation of representative test portions from the laboratory sample that has been taken according to the sampling plan (EN 14899), prior to physical and/or chemical analysis (e. g. preparation of eluates, extractions, digestion and/or analytical determinations) of solid (including monolithic material) and liquid samples and sludge. It is also applicable for the preparation of test portions from digests and eluates for the subsequent analyses. This European Standard is intended to find the correct sequence of operations and treatments to be applied to the laboratory sample in order to obtain suitable test portions in compliance with the specific requirements defined in the corresponding analytical procedures.

This European Standard is dedicated to field portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) equipment (hand-held or portable bench top) and specifies a screening method for the determination of the elemental composition of waste materials for on-site verification. Portable XRF spectrometers are used for a rapid and exploratory analysis of paste-like or solid materials. The absence or presence of specific elements is displayed qualitatively with an indication of the concentration level.
