This International Standard covers telescopic sticks and telescopic measuring sticks to be used for live working on a.c. or d.c. electrical installations at 1 000 V and above for a.c. and 1 500 V and above for d.c. The telescopic sticks are designed to accept attachments that meet appropriate live working standards and, together with these attachments, may be used to perform mechanical work on live parts at a distance. Telescopic sticks are also designed to accept diagnostic devices that meet appropriate live working standards and are used to make the diagnostic devices reach parts of an installation to be tested. Telescopic measuring sticks, or tele-scopic sticks equipped with graduations, are used to measure distances to or between live parts. NOTE Under certain circumstances, the telescopic sticks covered by this standard can be used for installing portable earthing or earthing and short-circuiting equipment if the mechanical stresses during use are lower than the rated values. The tools (telescopic sticks and telescopic measuring sticks) covered by this standard are for use under dry conditions but could also be used under very humid conditions, using appropriate working procedures. Telescopic hook sticks are not covered by this standard. Telescopic bonding sticks and any other speciality telescopic sticks designed at the request of users are not covered by this standard.

This part of IEC 61238 applies to compression and mechanical connectors for power cables for rated voltages up to 36 kV (Um = 42 kV), e.g. buried cables or cables installed in buildings, having a) conductors complying with IEC 60228 and IEC 60228A with cross-sectional areas 10 mm and greater for copper and 16 mm and greater for aluminium, b) a maximum continuous conductor temperature not exceeding 90 ℃. This standard is not applicable to connectors for overhead conductors, which are designed for special mechanical requirements, or to separable connectors with a sliding contact or multi-core connectors (i.e. ring connectors). Although it is not possible to define precisely the service conditions for all applications, two broad classes of connectors have been identified. Class A These are connectors intended for electricity distribution or industrial networks in which they can be subjected to short-circuits of relatively high intensity and duration. As a consequence, Class A connectors are suitable for the majority of applications. Class B These are connectors for networks in which overloads or short-circuits are rapidly cleared by the installed protective devices, e.g. fast-acting fuses. Depending on the application, the connectors are subjected to the following tests: Class A: heat cycle and short-circuit tests; Class B: heat cycle tests only. The object of this standard is to define the type test methods and requirements, which apply to compression and mechanical connectors for power cables with copper or aluminium conductors. Formerly, approval for such products has been achieved on the basis of national standards and specifications and/or the demonstration of satisfactory service performance. The publication of this IEC standard does not invalidate existing approvals. However, products approved according to these earlier standards or specifications cannot claim approval to this IEC standard unless specifically tested to it. After they have been made, these tests need not be repeated unless changes are made in the connector material, design or manufacturing process which might affect the performance characteristics.

This part of IEC 61249 gives requirements for properties of bismaleimide/triazine modified epoxide, or unmodified, woven E-glass reinforced laminate sheets of defined flam inability (vertical burning test), copper-clad in thicknesses of 0,05 mm to 3,2 mm. The flammability rating is achieved through the use of brominated fire retardants contained as an integral part of the epoxide polymeric structure. The glass transition temperature is defined to be 160 ℃ minimum. Some property requirements may have several classes of performance. The class desired needs to be specified on the purchase order, otherwise the default class of material may be supplied.
