This International Standard gives guidance on how failure rate data can be employed for reliability prediction of electric components in equipment. Reference conditions are numerical values of stresses that are typically observed by components in the majority of applications. Reference conditions are useful since they are the basis of the calculation of failure rate under any conditions by the application of stress models that take into account the actual operating conditions. Failure rates stated at reference conditions allow realistic reliability predictions to be made in the early design phase. The stress models described herein are generic and can be used as a basis for conversion of the failure rate data at these reference conditions to actual operating conditions when needed and this simplifies the prediction approach. Conversion of failure rate data is only permissible within the specified functional limits of the components. This standard also gives guidance on how a database of component failure data can be constructed to provide failure rates that can be used with the included stress models. Reference conditions for failure rate data are specified@ so that data from different sources can be compared on a uniform basis. If failure rate data are given in accordance with this International Standard then no additional information on the specified conditions is required. This standard does not provide base failure rates for components ?C rather it provides models that allow failure rates obtained by other means to be converted from one operating condition to another operating condition. The prediction methodology described in this standard assumes that the parts are being used within its useful life. The methods in this standard have a general application but are specifically applied to a selection of component types as defined in Clause 6 and Clause E.2.

This specification provides standard processes, instructions and default parameters for using the Physics of Failure (PoF) approach for modeling the reliability of electronic products. It includes a discussion of the philosophy, context for use, definitions, models for key failure mechanisms, definition of the input data required, default values if technically feasible or the typical range of values as a guideline. It defines how modeling results are interpreted and used. It requires the documentation of modeling inputs, assumptions made during the analysis, modifications to the models and rationale for the analysis.

This part of BS 5760 provides a description of the principles of the dependability case and provides guidance on its content and application in systems engineering. The dependability case can be used throughout the life cycle, from concept and definition, through design and development; manufacture and installation, to operations and maintenance; mid?life enhancement, and eventual disposal. Whilst this part of BS 5760 is primarily intended for application by the system developers, it will be of value to bodies who might be contracted to manage the dependability case for a project, where deemed necessary. This part of BS 5760 has five main clauses which describe: a) principles of the dependability case (Clause 5); b) development of the dependability case (Clause 6); c) providing the evidence (Clause 7); d) presenting the evidence (Clause 8); e) assessing the adequacy of the evidence (Clause 9). The activities required for the achievement of dependability depend on the nature and development state of the system and are likely to vary significantly from one project to another. The guidelines are not to be considered as being prescriptive in nature: they are generic and do not attempt to be exhaustive. Annex A describes the general requirements for the dependability case and dependability case report Annex B provides examples of dependability management risks at different stages of a system’s life cycle. Annex C provides a checklist of points for assessing the adequacy of evidence. The checklist is not to be considered to be prescriptive or exhaustive; it is generic and provides guidance to supplement the generic guidance provided in Clause 8. Annex D describes the dependability risk reduction process shown in Figure 7 using illustrative examples where appropriate. Annex E describes the dependability evidence framework, expanding on the information given in 5.1. Whilst this part of BS 5760 does not specifically address safety cases, the same principles can be applied.

This part of IEC 60300 provides guidelines for the development of failure management policies for equipment and structures using reliability centred maintenance (RCM) analysis techniques. This part serves as an application guide and is an extension of IEC 60300-3-10, IEC 60300-3-12 and IEC 60300-3-14. Maintenance activities recommended in all three standards, which relate to preventive maintenance, may be implemented using this standard. This standard is restricted to the application of RCM techniques and does not include aspects of maintenance support, which are covered by the above mentioned standards or other dependability and safety standards.
