Probe assemblies included in scope This part of IEC 61010 specifies safety requirements for hand-held and hand-manipulated probe assemblies of the types described below@ and their related accessories. These probe assemblies are for direct electrical connection between a part and electrical test and measurement equipment. They may be fixed to the equipment or be detachable accessories for the equipment. a) Type A: low-voltage and high-voltage@ non-attenuating probe assemblies. Non-attenuating probe assemblies that are RATED for direct connection to voltages exceeding 30 V r.m.s.@ 42@4 V peak@ or 60 V d.c.@ but not exceeding 63 kV. They do not incorporate components which are intended to provide a voltage divider function or a signal conditioning function@ but they may contain non-attenuating components such as fuses (see Figure 1.) b) Type B: high-voltage attenuating or divider probe assemblies. Attenuating or divider probe assemblies that are RATED for direct connection to secondary voltages exceeding 1 kV r.m.s. or 1@5 kV d.c. but not exceeding 63 kV r.m.s. or d.c. The divider function may be carried out wholly within the probe assembly@ or partly within the test or measurement equipment to be used with the probe assembly (see Figure 2). c) Type C: low-voltage attenuating or divider probe assemblies. Attenuating or divider probe assemblies for direct connection to voltages not exceeding 1 kV r.m.s. or 1@5 kV d.c. The signal conditioning function may be carried out wholly within the probe assembly@ or partly within the test or measurement equipment intended to be used with the probe assembly (see Figure 3). d) Type D: low-voltage attenuating@ non-attenuating or other signal conditioning probe assemblies@ that are RATED for direct connection only to voltages not exceeding 30 V r.m.s.@ or 42@4 V peak@ or 60 V d.c.@ and are suitable for currents exceeding 8 A (see Figure 4). Probe assemblies excluded from scope This standard does not apply to current sensors within the scope of IEC 61010-2-032 (Handheld and hand-manipulated current sensors)@ but may apply to their input measuring circuit leads and accessories. Object Aspects included in scope The purpose of the requirements of this standard is to ensure that HAZARDS to the OPERATOR and the surrounding area are reduced to a tolerable level. Requirements for protection against particular types of HAZARDS are given in Clauses 6 to 13@ as follows: a) electric shock or burn (see Clauses 6@ 10 and 11); b) mechanical HAZARDS (see Clauses 7@ 8 and 11); c) excessive temperature (see Clause 9); d) spread of fire from the probe assembly (see Clause 9); e) arc flash (see Clause 13). Additional requirements for probe assemblies which are designed to be powered from a lowvoltage mains supply@ or include other features not specifically addressed in this standard are in other parts of IEC 61010. NOTE Attention is drawn to the possible existence of additional requirements regarding the health and safety of labour forces. Aspects excluded from scope This standard does not cover: a) reliable function@ performance@ or other properties of the probe assembly; b) effectiveness of transport packaging.

Equipment included in scope This part of IEC 61010 specifies general safety requirements for the following types of electrical equipment and their accessories@ wherever they are intended to be used. a) Electrical test and measurement equipment This is equipment which by electromagnetic means tests@ measures@ indicates or records one or more electrical or physical quantities@ also non-measuring equipment such as signal generators@ measurement standards@ power supplies for laboratory use@ transducers@ transmitters@ etc. NOTE 1 This includes bench-top power supplies intended to aid a testing or measuring operation on another piece of equipment. Power supplies intended to power equipment are within the scope of IEC 61558 (see 1.1.2 h)). This standard also applies to test equipment integrated into manufacturing processes and intended for testing manufactured devices. NOTE 2 Manufacturing test equipment is likely to be installed adjacent to and interconnected with industrial machinery in this application. b) Electrical industrial process-control equipment This is equipment which controls one or more output quantities to specific values@ with each value determined by manual setting@ by local or remote programming@ or by one or more input variables. c) Electrical laboratory equipment This is equipment which measures@ indicates@ monitors@ inspects or analyses materials@ or is used to prepare materials@ and includes in vitro diagnostic (IVD) equipment. This equipment may also be used in areas other than laboratories; examples include selftest IVD equipment to be used in the home and inspection equipment to be used to check people or material during transportation. Equipment excluded from scope This standard does not apply to equipment within the scope of: a) IEC 60065 (Audio@ video and similar electronic apparatus); b) IEC 60204 (Safety of machinery ?C Electrical equipment of machines); c) IEC 60335 (Household and similar electrical appliances); d) IEC 60364 (Electrical installations of buildings); e) IEC 60439 (Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies); f) IEC 60601 (Medical electrical equipment); g) IEC 60950 (Information technology equipment including electrical business equipment@ except as specified in 1.1.3); h) IEC 61558 (Power transformers@ power supply units and similar); i) IEC 61010-031 (Hand-held probe assemblies); j) IEC 61243-3 (Live working ?C Voltage detectors ?C Part 3: Two-pole low-voltage type). Computing equipment This standard applies only to computers@ processors@ etc. which form part of equipment within the scope of this standard or are designed for use exclusively with the equipment. NOTE Computing devices and similar equipment within the scope of IEC 60950 and conforming to its requirements are considered to be suitable for use with equipment within the scope of this standard. However@ some of the requirements of IEC 60950 for resistance to moisture and liquids are less stringent than those in this standard (see 5.4.4 second paragraph)). Scope and object Equipment included in scope Replacement: This part of IEC 61010 specifies safety requirements for electrically powered laboratory equipment for the heating of materials@ where the heating of materials is one of the functions of the equipment. NOTE If all or part of the equipment falls within the scope of one or more other part 2 standards of IEC 61010 as well as within the scope of this standard@ it will also need to meet the requirements of those other part 2 standards. In particular@ if equipmen is intended to be used for IVD purposes@ it will need to meet the requirements of IEC 61010-2-101. Equipment excluded from scope Addition after item j): aa) equipment for the heating and ventilation of laboratories; bb) sterilizing equipment; cc) heating and/or cooling equipment which the OPERATOR is intended to enter@ and which is large enough for the OPERATOR to remain inside with the door or doors closed.
