This Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the requirements for suppliers of Shot Peening Services to be accredited by the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP). NADCAP accreditation is granted in accordance with SAE AS7003 after demonstration of compliance with the requirements herein. The requirements may be supplemented by additional requirements specified by the NADCAP Nonconventional Machining and Surface Enhancement (NMSE) Task Group. Using the corresponding Audit Criteria (PRI AC7117) will ensure that accredited Shot Peening suppliers meet all of the requirements in this standard and all applicable supplementary standards. The purpose of this audit program is to assess a suppliers ability to consistently provide a product or service that conforms to the technical specifications and customer requirements. The corresponding audit criteria are also structured to obtain information relevant to management practices and processes that directly or indirectly affect the product or service. This information will be used in the determination of accreditation status and may be used by the supplier to guide improvements in the product or service and the associated processes.

This specification has been declared "NONCURRENT" by the Aerospace Materials Division, SAE, as of June, 2007. It is recommended, therefore, that this specification not be specified for new designs. "NONCURRENT" refers to those specifications which have previously been widely used and which may be required on some existing designs in the future. The Aerospace Materials Division, however, does not recommend these specifications for future use in new designs. This specification covers the engineering requirements for applying tungsten carbide/cobalt coatings to metal parts by the detonation process and the properties of such coatings. This coating has been used typically to provide a hard, wear resistant surface on metal parts which do not operate in service higher than 1000 °F (538 °C) but usage is not limited to such applications. These coatings are not recommended for surfaces with deep vee-shaped grooves, blind cavities, narrow holes or sharp corners, or where deformation of the base metal may be expected. Higher cobalt content provides increased ductility for applications where impact or fretting wear is involved.

To provide general instructions for accomplishing ultrasonic thickness measurements. Measurements can be made from one side of a material when access to the opposite side is restricted. This Recommended Practice is intended for, but not limited to use at maintenance and overhaul facilities to inspect aerospace structures and hardware for material loss or remaining thickness after rework or fabrication processes. Due to the number of variables which can affect the reliability of ultrasonic thickness measurements, it is only recommended for use when mechanical methods of measurement are not practical.

This recommended practice establishes procedures for the application of long string abrasive fibers to machined aircraft structures for the purpose of removing burrs produced during the machining operations. This procedure is applicable to aluminum, titanium, and steel, but usage is not limited to such applications. The process is applicable to the removal of light machining burrs but will not remove burrs that have been extruded by dull cutting tools. The process described responds to an automated brush deburring method that would lend itself to machine automation and robotic applications and be applicable to a wide range of part geometry variables.
