Gas compressors (air and other compressible fluids) have been used sporadically since the 1940's for various utility functions in aerospace applications. They have been used to provide power to gun purge and drive systems, engine or APU starters (recharge accumulators), reservoir pressurization, cockpit pressurization, braking systems, canopy seals, engine control divides, landing gear activation, and boosted flight controls. This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the requirements for beaded fluid connection fittings (see Section 6) for use in all types of fluid systems. Fittings shall be furnished in the types and styles designated by the applicable AN or other engineering standard drawings. This specification is the same as MIL-F-5509 as applicable to beaded fittings except for updated materials and process specifications and industry coordinated general improvements. It is intended to serve as a procurement specification for the fittings described herein and in Section 6.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) establishes the method for qualification testing of tube joints and fitting attachments, using the flexure test method described in ARP1185. This qualification test method allows the determination of S-N type stress versus cycles or D-N type deflection versus cycles curves, as illustrated in AIR1418 as an alternate to flexure testing to a minimum endurance stress level.
