This document has been declared "Stabilized" and will no longer be subjected to periodic reviews for currency. Users are responsible for verifying references and continued suitability or technical requirements. New technology may exist. This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) specifies guidelines for calculating and performing shoring (load spreading) required on board civil transport aircraft whenever a piece of cargo to be carried exceeds the aircraft's maximum allowable limits in area load, running load, or both. It provides both the engineering methods needed to properly design a shoring arrangement, and the main practical dos and donts known from experience to ensure its effectiveness in protecting the aircraft's structure against overload. This document aims at providing recognized industry standard methods to achieve the best attainable level of aircraft structural protection when designing and performing a shoring arrangement, taking into account the general requirements expressed in the aircraft manufacturers Weight and Balance Manuals, the requirements to be met as a result of the air cargo pallets airworthiness certification requisites, as well as the various potential areas of concern identified based on experience. This document, therefore, provides recommended practical means of compliance with flight safety objectives, intended to be available as a common base for carriers as well as their airport handling agents when establishing their own in-house procedures, publications and staff training programs. This document, however, is primarily intended for use by qualified structural engineers to be responsible for calculating and implementing cargo shoring arrangements where the size and weight of the piece of cargo require. It is not intended as a guide for more common simpler shoring requirements, identified thereafter: ARP5486, Air Cargo Pallets - Utilization Guidelines, Section 5 addresses such relatively simple cases. This document shall not, under any circumstance, supersede the requirements of applicable airworthiness regulations (see FAR Part 25) or the aircraft manufacturer's Weight and Balance Manual. In addition, any aircraft manufacturers specific cargo shoring instructions shall be strictly complied with. Since in several instances they contain proprietary data, such data should be used only by authorized companies and persons with proper understanding thereof.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is intended to cover the external lights on fixed wing aircraft for illuminating the wing leading edge and engine nacelles and the upper surfaces of the wing. The addition of ice detection system should be implemented when the areas to inspect are not visable from the aircraft cockpit. It is not intended that this Recommended Practice require the use of any particular light source such as Halogen, LED or other specific design of lamp. The purpose of this document is to set forth basic considerations and criteria which should be observed when designing wing inspection lights for all aircraft.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) specifies requirements for those portions of the aircraft unit load device ground and terminal handling equipment that will have a direct bearing on the life of the device for the purpose of preventing undue wear on the device. Past experience has shown that in-service defects in regard to the above equipment cause high devices cost. Greater control of maintenance is required. Included in this document are requirements for conveyor systems, guides, stops, resitraint hardware that are used on trucks, transporters, dollies, storage provisions, pallet build-up hoists, or other ULD-handling equipment. These requirements reflect state of the art criteria applied to known successfully operated hardware. Any design deviations shall be required to demonstrate equivalency to this specification criteria. These ULD's usually form an integral part of the aircraft and as such are subject to regulatory agencies' requirements to assure structural intgrity. Size, shape and load capacities for ULD's are not included in this document. These can be obtained from SAE or IATA speciications, the airline operator and the ULD manufacturer.

The requirements of this SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) are applicable to ground handling and transport systems equipment which is designated to accommodate main deck unitized cargo in the form of intermodal containers and other compatible unitized load devices. Intermodality in the context of this document concerns primarily air and land modes but does not exclude the marine mode. Equipment with compatibility features for other than main deck cargo is likewise not excluded. It is not the intent of this document to specify equipment design but rather to ensure interface compatibility of the various elements which might make up a total ground handling and transport system developed within a number of different operational schemes. It is the intent of this document to specify minimum ULD handling and restraint features to ensure future interchange capability. This document specifies minimum performance and compatibility requirements for air cargo unit load device (ULD) ground handling and transport systems equipment employed to service wide-body freighter aircraft operations.

The requirements for cabin pressure for all types of aircraft have been established for the Armed Services in military specifications, by the Federal Aviation Authority and by the SAE in recommendations. These requirements limit the cabin altitude to 8000 ft in transport and long range military aircraft. In the fighter aircraft, when the pilot uses oxygen and the mission duration is relatively brief, cabin altitudes up to 25,000 ft are allowed. Supersonic transports, which operate at high speed and high altitude, have short flight durations and high rates of descent. To avoid an uncomfortable rate of change of cabin pressure when descending from high altitudes, a maximum cabin altitude of 6000 ft is recommended. The pressurization system design considerations presented in this AIR deal with human physiological requirements, characteristics of pressurization air sources, methods of controlling cabin pressure, cabin leakage control, leakage calculation methods, and methods of emergency cabin pressure release.

This International Standard specifies the dimensions and construction of, and requirements for, four types of hose and hose assembly for use in all operations associated with the ground fuelling and defuelling of aircraft. All four types are designed for a) use with petroleum fuels having an aromatic-hydrocarbon content not exceeding 30 % by volume; b) operation within the temperature range of −30 °C to +65 °C and such that they will be undamaged by climatic conditions of −40 °C to +70 °C when stored in static conditions; c) operation at up to 2,0 MPa (20 bar) maximum working pressure, including surges of pressure which the hose can be subjected to in service. NOTE 1 Type C hoses are intended for general pressure applications on all vehicles used for plane fuelling. They can also be used for vehicle/rail car loading and discharge where excessive vacuum does not occur. NOTE 2 Type F hoses can be used for plane delivery applications on vehicles that are also used for defuelling at high flow rates where type C hoses are not suitable. NOTE 3 Type E and F hoses can also be used for vehicle/rail car loading and discharge, for trailer to fueller transfer and for elevation platform supply (riser) to provide greater kink resistance.

1.1 This International Standard specifies the minimum functional, performance and safety requirements for a catering vehicle capable of transporting and loading/unloading in-flight service (catering) equipment and supplies into or from the upper deck of very large capacity aircraft, as well as the main deck of these or other aircraft types. 1.2 The intent of this International Standard is not to specify equipment design, but rather to define minimum functional and performance requirements and highlight those criteria which are known to be essential to an efficient and safe operation on civil transport aircraft in the environment of international airports. 1.3 This International Standard specifies the worldwide requirements recognized by aircraft and vehicle manufacturers as well as airlines and catering agencies. In addition, it shall be applied with due reference to the national governmental regulations of the country where the vehicle is to be operated. The main though not exclusive areas in which such national regulations may apply are: - general requirements applicable to road vehicles; - sanitary requirements regarding design, cleaning and disinfection of vehicles used to carry food for human consumption; - stability and other safety requirements applicable to elevating equipment carrying personnel in the elevated position. Nothing in this International Standard, however, shall be deemed to supersede any locally applicable law or regulation, unless a specific exemption has been obtained for this purpose from the appropriate Authority. 1.4 Certain requirements of this International Standard are specifically dictated by overwing access to doors of certain aircraft types, and may not apply to other aircraft types. However, the intent of this International Standard is that any upper deck catering vehicle shall be capable of safely handling this specific situation.
