Scope

1.1 This standard specifies the design, construction and test requirements for electrical equipment protected by enclosures and limited surface temperatures in combustible dust environments. In this environment, combustible dust can be present in quantities that can create an explosion hazard. 1.2 Section 1 of this standard specifies the design, construction and test requirements for electrical equipment. Part 1.2 of this standard is a guide for the selection, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment. 1.3 Prevention of ignition is mainly to limit the maximum surface temperature of the enclosure and to use "dust-tight" or "dust-proof" enclosures to limit the entry of dust. 1.4 This standard does not apply to explosive dusts or pyrophoric substances which do not require atmospheric oxygen to burn. 1.5 For electrical equipment used in an environment where combustible gas and combustible dust may appear simultaneously or separately, some additional protective measures are required. 1.6 This standard does not apply to electrical equipment used in underground coal mines where methane and/or combustible dust cause hazards. This standard does not consider the hazards caused by flammable or toxic gases emitted by dust. 1.7 When the equipment must meet the requirements of other environmental conditions (such as adopting other protection methods for waterproof and anti-corrosion), the protection methods must not have an adverse effect on the integrity of the enclosure.
