This part of EN 13523 specifies the procedure for determining the gloss of an organic coating on a metallic substrate. Gloss is a characteristic of fundamental importance to the appearance of the coil coated product. The apparatus requires a flat specimen of size greater than the aperture, thus, uneven surfaces cannot be measured. This method is applicable to all pigmented and unpigmented coatings including metallic/pearlescent coatings. However, for textured coatings it is only indicative.

This part of EN 13523 specifies the procedure for determining the resistance to water immersion of an organic coating on a metallic substrate. The test is applicable to all kinds of organic coatings, including metallics and embossed, textured, pearlescent and printed coatings. The results of the test give an indication of the resistance of the coil coated metal to water. The method is not intended to reproduce any particular condition of condensation.

5.1 Coating on substrates can be damaged by abrasion during manufacturing and service. This test method has been useful in evaluating the abrasion resistance of coatings. Ratings produced by this test method have correlated well with ratings produced by the falling abrasive values in Test Methods D968. 5.2 For some materials, abrasion tests utilizing the Taber Abraser may be subject to variation due to changes in the abrasive characteristics of the wheel during testing. Depending on abrading type and test specimen, the wheel surface may change (that is, become clogged) due to the adhesion of debris generated during the test and must be refaced at more frequent intervals as agreed upon by the interested parties. To determine if more frequent refacing is required, plot the total weight loss every 50 cycles. If a significant negative change in slope is observed prior to 500 cycles, the point at which the slope changes determines the refacing frequency. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the resistance of organic coatings to abrasion produced by the Taber Abraser on coatings applied to a plane, rigid surface, such as a metal panel. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard, with the exception of mils when determining coating thickness. 1.3 This standard is similar in content (but not technically equivalent) to ISO 7784–2. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 3.1 These test methods can be used to determine the various stages and rates of drying, curing, and film formation of organic coatings for comparing types of coatings, assessing the impact of compositional changes on drying time, or for assessing drying/curing time in the shop or field. Low temperature can significantly slow the drying rate of coatings so low temperature curing agents, catalysts and/or accelerators are often available to aid drying and film formation under cooler temperatures. Method B is designed to evaluate these components and/or to determine the effect of cooler temperatures on drying rates. Conversely, the drying/curing rate of certain coatings can be accelerated under elevated temperature/humidity conditions, while others may be adversely impacted by elevated humidity. Method C is designed to evaluate the effects of elevated temperature and relative humidity conditions on drying, curing, and film formation of paints and coatings. The terms dry or drying, cure or curing, and film formation are used interchangeably throughout this standard. 3.2 Test Methods A, B and C are limited to a comparison of paints/coatings applied to smooth, non-absorbent substrates and do not reflect the effect of absorption of the paint vehicle into the substrate material. 1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the various stages and rates of film formation in the drying or curing of organic coatings under laboratory controlled conditions of air temperature, (low, ambient and/or elevated) and/or humidity. Procedures for assessing drying under prevailing conditions of temperature and humidity in the shop and field are also described. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This European Standard specifies performance requirements for organic coating powders and powder organic coatings as applied to finished articles (hot dip galvanised or sherardised steel products) for construction purposes. Hot dip galvanised steel products can be articles that have been batch hot dip galvanised (hot dip galvanised after fabrication) or articles consisting of continuously hot dip galvanised sheet which is then subsequently fabricated. This European Standard does not set out any performance requirements for the powder coating process itself. Guidance on cleaning and pretreatment of the hot dip galvanised or sherardised steel products prior to powder coating is provided. This European Standard does not apply to articles with zinc-aluminium coatings or aluminium-zinc coatings, or to continuously hot dip galvanised wire. This standard does not apply to organic coating powders and powder organic coatings as applied to hot dip galvanised or sherardised steel products (i.e. duplex coated articles) for which there are specific standards, which might include additional requirements or requirements which are different from those of this standard.

5.1 The results of the combined deformation and tape test are related to the ability of the coated metal to withstand stamping in factory applications. 5.2 This test can be used to control the manufacturing process or in development work to improve the product. 5.3 It should be recognized that variability in the results persist due to the test conditions and forming machine variations. 1.1 This test method covers the evaluation of the formability and adhesion of factory applied thin film organic coatings on steel with thicknesses of 2.5 to 10 microns (0.10 to 0.40 mils) typical of those used in the coil coating industry. 1.2 The degree of oil removal prior to forming, the techniques of taping, and differences in adhesive strength of the tape can affect the adhesion rating. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.
