This standard provides guidelines for the determination of the total specific external and internal surface area of disperse or porous (pore diameter > 2 nm) fine ceramic materials by measuring the amount of physically adsorbed gas according to the method of Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET mehtod). General guidelines of the method are described in ISO 9277. This standard only focuses on specific details relevant to fine ceramic materials. It should further be noted that the BET method cannot be applied to type I isotherms (microporous materials or chemisorption behaviour) or when the solid absorbs the measuring gas.

This standard specifies a method of digesting silicon carbide and ceramics containing silicon carbide as a main or subsidiary constituent. The method can be used to determine the total content of silicon and contents of metallic impurities, such as aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, titanium and vanadium, exceeding 0,05 % (m/m) in each case. It can also be used to determine lower contents not exceeding 0,05 % (m/m) provided a test is performed for losses due to, for example, diffusion or alloy formation with the crucible material in individual cases. NOTE 1 The aluminium, calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, silicon, titanium and vanadium contents may be determined, for example, by the methods specified in DIN EN 955-2 or DIN 51083-1 to DIN 51083-10, respectively. NOTE 2 General information on methods of digestion for specific groups of substances prior to X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) are given in Supplement 1 to DIN 51001-1 for materials containing silicon carbide.

This standard specifies a method of analysing the silicon carbide (c~-SiC and l~-SiC) used, for example, as raw material for high-performance ceramics by digesting it with acid in a pressure vessel. It does not cover materials containing silicon carbide along with oxidic constituents and binders. The method can be used to determine the total contents of the trace impurities aluminium, calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, nickel and titanium provided they are present in amounts of not less than 50 mg/kg. Other metallic trace elements can be determined provided they form a permanent solution under the digestion conditions. NOTE 1 Aluminium contents greater than I 000 mg/kg, calcium contents greater than 500 mg/kg or magnesium contents greater than 100 mg/kg may give results that are too Iow owing to the formation of sparingly soluble fluorides. NOTE 2 The aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and titanium contents may be determined, for example, by the methods specified in DIN EN 955-2 or DIN 51083-1 to DIN 51083-10, respectively. NOTE 3 General information on methods of digestion for specific groups of substances prior to X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) are given in Supplement 1 to DIN 51001-1 for materials containing oxidic constituents and binders, including silicon carbide.

This standard specifies digestion methods for rendering aluminosilicate samples soluble. To take account of the analytical methods specified in other parts of this series of standards and of the possible interferences resulting from the digestion, the following two methods have been adopted. Digestion method A Digestion with hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids followed by alkaline fusion digestion to determine: a) aluminium oxide, AI203, complexometrically as specified in DIN 51083-4; b) titanium(IV) oxide, TiO2, photometrically as specified in DIN 51083-5; c) calcium oxide, CaO, complexometrically as specified in DIN 51083-7 for a CaO content exceeding 10 %; d) phosphorus(V) oxide, P205, photometrically as specified in DIN 51083-9. Digestion method B Digestion with hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids to determine: a) iron(III) oxide, Fe203, by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) as specified in DIN 51083-6; b) manganese(Il) oxide, MnO, by AAS as specified in DIN 51083-6; c) calcium oxide, CaO, by AAS as specified in DIN 51083-7 for a CaO content of 10 % or less; d) magnesium oxide, MgO, by AAS as specified in DIN 51083-8; e) e) lithium oxide, Li20, sodium oxide, Na20, and potassium oxide, K20, by flame emission as specified in DIN 51083-10. NOTE The determination of SiO2, including digestion methods, is specified in DIN 51083-2.
