1.1 This guide identifies terminology, principles, and fundamental concepts including those related to sustainability, technical requirements of construction, and types of vegetative (green) roof systems used on buildings. 1.2 The considerations for sustainable development relative to vegetative (green) roof systems are categorized as follows: environmental, social, and economic as consistent with Guide E2432. (See Appendix X1.) 1.3 This guide discusses technical requirements for vegetative (green) roof systems pertaining to the following categories: plants, media, wind scour resistance, soil reinforcement, separation or filter layers, drain layers, water retention layers, protection layers, and root penetration barriers. 1.4 This guide addresses intensive and extensive vegetative (green) roof systems for roofs up to 15 % slope. Roofing/ waterproofing membranes and insulation are key components of vegetative (green) roof systems, but technical requirements regarding their role in such roof systems is beyond the scope of this guide. NOTE 1—ASTM Technical Committees D08 and C16 have jurisdiction over the development of standards for roofing/waterproofing membranes and insulations, respectively. Some of their existing standards may be helpful in the evaluation of membranes and insulation used in vegetative (green) roof systems. As these two committees develop standards for such roofs, this guide will be revised appropriately. 1.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. BS EN 508 ‑ 2 is the second part of the EN 508 multi-series that discusses roofing and cladding products from metal sheets. This part of EN 508 specifies requirements for self-supporting external profiled sheets for roof covering, wall cladding, lining and liner tray products for discontinuous laying made from aluminium sheet with or without surface treatment (additional organic coatings or anodising). This document establishes general characteristics, definitions, classifications and labelling for the products, together with requirements for the materials from which the products can be manufactured. It is intended to be used either by manufacturers to ensure that their products comply with the requirements or by purchasers to verify that the products comply before they are made available on the market before being despatched from the factory. It specifies the requirements for products which enable them to meet all normal service conditions. This document applies to all discontinuously laid self-supporting external profiled sheets for roof covering, wall cladding, lining and liner trays with the exception of tiles with a surface area less than 1 m2 and produced by stamping. These profiled roof sheets are designed to keep wind, rain and snow out of the building, and to transfer any resultant loads and infrequent maintenance loads to the structure. This document does not cover products for structural purposes, i.e. it does cover products used in structural class III (according to EN 1999-1-4), it does not cover products used in constructions of Structural Classes I and II (according to EN 1999-1-4) intended to contribute to the global or partial stability of the building structure by providing racking resistance or resistance of permanent static loads (excluding self-weight of the metal sheet). 1.1 This test method covers procedures designed (1) to evaluate the static shear capacity of a typical segment of a framed diaphragm under simulated loading conditions, and (2) to provide a determination of the stiffness of the construction and its connections. 1.1 This test method covers a procedure for determining the maximum media density for purposes of estimating the maximum dead load for green roof assemblies. The method also provides a measure of the moisture content, the air-filled porosity, and the water permeability measured at the maximum media density. 1.2 This procedure is suitable for green roof media that contain no more than 30 % organic material as measured using the loss on ignition, as described in Test Methods E177, Test Method C. The test specimen should be a bulk oven-dried sample prepared according to Test Methods E177, Test Method A. 1.3 The maximum media density and associated moisture content measured in this procedure applies to drained conditions near the saturation point. 1.4 The test method is intended to emulate vertical percolation rates for water in green roofs. 1.5 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard.
