This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives used for retaining cylindrical assemblies pin-and-collar type, or for locking and sealing threaded fasteners. This test method may also be used for other adhesives. The test is for ranking and quality control of adhesives. The result does not necessarily reflect the performance of the materials in service and the test is not suitable for providing numerical data for design purposes. NOTE Numerical design data may be obtained from tests using the materials and configurations used in the actual structure.

This European Standard describes the test method to be used to determine the wetting capability of ceramic tile adhesives. This standard is applicable to all ceramic tile adhesives for internal or external tile installations on walls and floors. This European Standard does not contain performance requirements or recommendations for the design and installation of ceramic tiles. NOTE Ceramic tile adhesives may also be used for other types of tiles (natural and agglomerated stones, etc), where these do not adversely affect the stones.

1.1 This standard specifies test procedures for determining the long-term durability of an adhesive system subjected to environmental and fatigue loads. The procedures are based upon measurement of the crack growth rate and the resistance to crack propagation through the adhesive layer in double cantilever beam type specimens under an applied mode I opening cycling loading. 1.2 The test specimens consist of rectangular metal substrates bonded together with a pre-starter crack in the bondline. For testing joints consisting of relatively thin sheets of metallic substrates the specimen needs to be structurally reinforced by adding layers of compatible material to the back of each adherend substrate in order to prevent permanent deformation, usually referred to as reinforced double cantilever beam (RDCB) test specimen. 1.3 For brevity, the standard relates to testing RDCB specimens, which are essentially more complex in manufacturing than standard double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. However, the standard allows also for use of single substrate double cantilever beam specimens when the substrate material is available in sufficient thickness. 1.4 The test method has been proven to be particularly sensitive in finding weaknesses within certain adhesive systems and is recommended as a scientific tool to study adhesion properties. This test method may be used to determine: - The fatigue crack growth rate as a function of the mode I strain energy release rate; - The threshold values for negligible crack growth; - The effects of other environmental factors (temperature and/or humidity cycling); - The mode I (peel or crack opening) failure mode of the adhesive joint (cohesive, interfacial, near-surface ...).

It should be used in conjunction with EN 204 and EN 205, which describe durability classes and corresponding test methods for non-structural wood adhesives based on their ability to withstand various water treatments and relatively rapidly applied loads. The test described in this standard may be used to assess joints made with thin glue line, as defined in EN 205. NOTE The test described in this standard is not a mandatory requirement for the classification of adhesives into the classes D1, D2, D3 and D4 given in EN 204. It is an additional test that can be specified by a purchaser if required.

This European standard specifies a procedure for the determination of volatile isocyanates in the exhaust air of an emission test chamber after application of a low-solvent or solvent-free adhesive as defined in EN 923. The method is based on chemosorption of volatile isocyanates with 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine(in the following:1-2MP)impregnated filters with subsequent desorption and liquid chromatographic analysis.The method permits measurement of a wide range of organic compounds containing isocyanate functional groups(NCO),including isocyanate monomers.For testing of adhesives emissions mainly toluene diisocyanate(TDI)and methylene bis(4-phenyl isocyanate also knownas 4,4-diisocyanato-diphenylmethane or MDI),are of concern. The method as described in this European standard can be used for other isocyanates too,such as isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI)and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI)-see ISO 16072.Isocyanate oligomers or prepolymers are not volatile enough to be detected in emission test chambers at room temperature.
