This Standard is intended to establish uniform practices for the measurement of thread measuring wires. The standard includes methods for the direct measurement of both master and working wires, and methods for the comparison measurement of working wires. The standard includes requirements for geometric qualities of thread measuring wires, the important characteristics of the comparison equipment, environmental conditions, and the means to ensure that measurements are made with an acceptable uncertainty level. Wires covered by the standard include inch series 60-deg, 20-deg Acme, 7/45-deg Buttress, and metric 60-deg threads.

This part of ISO 228 specifies the requirements for thread form, dimensions, tolerances and designation for fastening pipe threads, thread sizes 1/16 to 6 inclusive. Both internal and external threads are parallel threads, intended for the mechanical assembly of the component parts of fittings, cocks and valves, accessories, etc. These threads are not suitable as jointing threads where a pressure-tight joint is made on the thread. If assemblies with such threads must be made pressure-tight, this should be effected by compressing two tightening surfaces outside the threads, and by interposing an appropriate seal. NOTE 1 For pipe threads where pressure-tight joints are made on the threads, see ISO 7-1. NOTE 2 ISO 228-2 gives details of methods for verification of fastening thread dimensions and form, and recommended gauging systems.

This part of ISO 7 specifies a process using limit gauges, for the validation of taper internal and external threads and parallel internal threads on piping systems components and other products, the dimensions and tolerances of which are detailed in ISO 7-1. The gauging system described may not be suitable, without special precautions, for gauging of threads on injection moulded plastic workpieces. This part of ISO 7 does not cover completely all the requirements necessary for full control of thread quality and dimensions. Additional control of tools and equipment and visual inspection during production are required to ensure complete compliance with ISO 7-1, for example the length of useful thread on internally threaded workpieces should be checked by direct measurement. Annex A gives a summary of the gauges included in this part of ISO 7, together with details of the thread elements controlled by each gauge and gauge identification numbers. In the event of a dispute over compliance with the requirements of ISO 7-1, the gauges in this part of ISO 7 are to be considered as decisive for the thread elements which they control on the workpiece.

It determines the basic triangular profile for this type of thread and gives a system for designating the diameter and number of threads per inch combinations. For all diameters 0,060 in (1,524 mm) to 6,000 in (152,4 mm), it offers in the form of tables the basic dimensions and tolerances for a selection of diameter and number of threads per inch combinations. It also provides the method of calculation for the dimensions and tolerances for any diameter and number of threads per inch combination not given in the tables, including threads with a diameter in excess of 6,000 in.
