This European Standard specifies requirements for the construction, testing and performance of electronic portable and transportable apparatus for the detection and measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) and/or carbon monoxide (CO) in indoor ambient air, which includes air entering mechanical ventilation systems in domestic residential, commercial and industrial premises and public buildings. This European Standard includes indoor air quality apparatus with CO and CO2 measuring capabilities. This European Standard excludes: ? apparatus used in workplace atmospheres for the direct detection and direct concentration measurement of toxic gases and vapours (i.e. conforming to EN 45544 series); ? electronic portable combustion gas analysers (i.e. conforming to EN 50379 series); ? apparatus for the detection of carbon monoxide in domestic premises (i.e. conforming to EN 50291 series). NOTE 1 Examples of applications are monitoring indoor air quality, measuring CO and/or CO2 concentrations in commercial laundry and kitchen environments, assessing the safe operation of appliances installed in compartments. NOTE 2 When this apparatus is used in industrial premises national regulations may apply.

IMPORTANT — Certain types of smoke alarms contain radioactive materials. The national requirements for radiation protection differ from country to country and they are not specified in this International Standard. Such smoke alarms should, however, comply with the applicable national standards, which should be consistent with the recommendations of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This International Standard specifies requirements, test methods, performance criteria, and manufacturer's instructions for smoke alarms that operate using scattered light, transmitted light, or ionization, and are intended for household or similar residential applications. For the testing of other types of smoke alarms, or smoke alarms working on different principles, this International Standard should be used only for guidance. Smoke alarms with special characteristics and developed for specific risks are not covered by this International Standard. This International Standard allows, although it does not require, the inclusion within the smoke alarm of facilities for the following: ? visual alarm condition indication; ? visual fault condition indication; ? extended temperature-range operation; ? interconnection with other similar smoke alarms or accessories; ? alarm-silencing facility. Where such facilities are included, this International Standard specifies applicable requirements. This International Standard does not cover devices intended for incorporation in systems using separate control and indicating equipment. Such systems are specified in all parts of ISO 7240.

This part of ISO 7240 specifies the requirements, test methods and performance criteria for audible alarm devices intended to signal an audible warning of fire between a detection and alarm system and the occupants of a building. It is intended to cover only those devices which derive their operating power by means of a physical electrical connection to an external source such as a fire alarm system. This part of ISO 7240 is also intended to cover audible alarm devices capable of giving voice messages by the application of specific requirements, tests and performance criteria. This part of ISO 7240 specifies fire alarm audible alarm devices for two types of application environment, type A for indoor use and type B for outdoor use. This part of ISO 7240 is not intended to cover: a) loudspeaker-type devices primarily intended for emitting emergency voice messages that are generated from an external audio source; b) supervisory audible alarm devices, e.g. within the control and indicating equipment.
