This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to serve as a guide for standardization of features, dimensions, and configurations of balance weights and rim flanges for aluminum and steel wheels intended for use on passenger cars, light trucks, and multipurpose vehicles to assure good installation and retention of the balance weight on the rim flange. This document also provides test procedures and minimum performance requirements for testing balance weight retention. Alternate materials and geometries can be addressed in the future, for example adhesive balance weights.

It is intended for passenger car applications, and special vehicle applications where the wheel may impact the kerb, with the purpose of screening and/or quality control of the wheel. This International Standard specifies a test method to evaluate the strength of the nut seat of wheels intended for use on passenger cars, light trucks and multi-purpose vehicles. While this test ensures the minimum strength of the nut seat, the wheel must also have a degree of flexibility to allow torque retention. This test evaluates the axial strength of the nut seat. In addition, the informative annex provides recommended bearing area to ensure enough strength for the rotational force in tightening a nut against the nut seat.

This International Standard presents a vocabulary of terms related to, and systems for the designation and marking of, wheels and rims intended for use with pneumatic tyres. The intention is to define fundamental wheel and rim terms rather than provide a comprehensive tabulation of all wheel design features. Also specified are the content, location and minimum size of the wheel and rim marking, with the purpose of establishing, on a worldwide basis, a uniform identification system for wheels and rims. NOTE 1 In addition to terms in English and French (two of the three official ISO languages), this International Standard gives the equivalent terms in German; these are published under the responsibility of the member bodies for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions. See Annex C.

This SAE practice is intended for the sample preparation of test pieces for automotive wheels and wheel trim. The practice provides a consistent scribing method for use on test panels and or component parts with substrate chemical pretreatment and coating systems. Test specimens can then be subjected to various corrosion tests in order to evaluate performance without significant variations of the degree of exposure of the substrate. The scribing is used to create a break in the coating/finishing as can occur in the field through gravel and other damaging conditions.

This test method differentiates among greases having distinctly different low-temperature characteristics. This test is used for specification purposes and correlates with its precursor which has been used to predict the performance of greases in automotive wheel bearings in low-temperature service.4 It is the responsibility of the user to determine the correlation with other types of service.1.1 This test method determines the extent to which a test grease retards the rotation of a specially-manufactured, spring-loaded, automotive-type wheel bearing assembly when subjected to low temperatures. Torque values, calculated from restraining-force determinations, are a measure of the viscous resistance of the grease. This test method was developed with greases giving torques of less than 35 Nm at -40176;C.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
