This SAE Recommended Practice defines the information required to repair the various types of plastics found on modern light-duty highway vehicles. Information is included for the repair and refinishing of most flexible, semi-flexible, and rigid plastic body parts, both interior and exterior. Repair information is described for all commonly used plastics including polyurethanes, polycarbonate blends, modified polypropylenes, polyethylenes, nylons, sheet-molded compounds (SMC), and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). Repairs can be made to these types of plastics using two-part (2K) repair adhesives, plastic welding, and other materials available from body shop suppliers. When a new type of plastic is being introduced to the market through a new vehicle program, specific repair and refinishing procedures should be provided, following the format in this document. The use of plastics in cars has increased to over 12% by weight, with several types being used for structural and mechanical applications. Interior and exterior plastic body parts have become an integral part of the automotive design, reducing overall weight to aid in increasing fuel efficiency. The use of plastic compounds for these parts has expanded to include polyurethanes, polycarbonate blends, modified polypropylenes, polyethylenes, nylons, sheet-molding compound (SMC), and fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP). This document is intended to guide vehicle manufacturers, material suppliers, and equipment suppliers in providing timely repair information to repairers and insurers. Providing this information prior to vehicle introduction is necessary to allow damaged vehicles to be restored to their pre-accident condition.

This SAE Recommended Practice provides performance and sampling requirements, test procedures, and marking requirements for aftermarket wheels intended for normal highway use on passenger cars, light trucks, and multipurpose passenger vehicles. For aftermarket wheels on trailers drawn by passenger cars, light trucks or multipurpose vehicles, see SAE J1204. These performance requirements apply only to wheels made of materials included in Table 1 and Table 2. New nomenclature and terms are added to clarify wheel constructions typically not used in OEM applications. The testing procedures and requirements are based on SAE standards listed in the references.

1.1 This specification covers seven classes of carbon steel tires for railway and rapid transit use. 1.1.1 Class A—For untreated driving tires for locomotives in passenger service. 1.1.2 Class AHT—For heat-treated driving tires for locomotives in passenger service. 1.1.3 Class B—For untreated driving tires for freight locomotives and tires for locomotive-truck, tender-truck, trailer and car wheels, and miscellaneous service. 1.1.4 Class BHT—For heat-treated driving tires for freight locomotives and tires for trailer wheels. 1.1.5 Class C—For untreated tires for switching locomotives. 1.1.6 Class CHT—For heat-treated driving tires and switching locomotives and tires for locomotive-trucks, tender-trucks, trailer and car wheels, and miscellaneous service. 1.1.7 Class DHT—For heat-treated driving tires for locomotives with light braking conditions, heavily loaded trailer tires, and rapid transit wheels where off-tread brakes are employed. 1.2 Supplementary requirements, including those in the general requirements of Specification A788/A788M, are provided for use when additional testing or inspection is desired. These shall apply only when specified individually by the purchaser in the order. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text and tables the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.4 Unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation, the tires shall be furnished to the inch-pound units.

This test procedure defines a laboratory procedure for generating and evaluating filiform corrosion on painted aluminum wheels and painted aluminum wheel trim. While this test was developed specifically for the testing of painted aluminum wheels and wheel trim it may be applicable to other components. The application owner will need to assess if this test generates filiform similar to that found in the relevant usage to ensure it will provide accurate data for the application. To establish a uniform test method for the wheel and wheel trim industry when assessing the resistance of components to filiform corrosion. An objective is to reduce test procedure proliferation and thereby reduce costs for establishing and maintaining unique test facilities, test methods, measurement methods, laboratory accreditations, and operator training. The net effect is to reduce cost while improving the quality of the test data by adopting uniform and standardized test methods. The procedure does not establish performance standards for the components. Performance standards are to be established by the users of the test and/or their clients. The method and format for documenting proficiency is defined.
