This standard specifies the terms and definitions, normal and special service conditions, ratings, design and structure, type test, factory test and selection guidelines for gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear. This standard applies to indoor and outdoor installations of gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (hereinafter referred to as "GIS" or "switchgear") with a rated voltage of 72.5 kV and above and a rated frequency of 50 Hz, the insulation of which is at least partially obtained by insulating gas rather than air at atmospheric pressure. The gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear covered by this standard consists of individual elements which can be connected directly together and which can only be operated in this way. As needed, this standard completes and supplements the relevant standards applicable to each individual component that constitutes a GIS.
