This standard specifies indoor and outdoor installations of gas-insulated metal-enclosed shapes for rated AC voltages of 72.5 kV and above and rated frequency of 50 Hz, the insulation of which is obtained at least in part by insulating gas rather than air at atmospheric pressure. For the purposes of this standard, the terms "GIS" and "switchgear" are both used to describe "gas-insulated metal-enclosed shape equipment". Gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear covered by this standard consists of individual elements which can be connected directly together and which can only be operated in this way. As needed, this standard completes and supplements the relevant standards applicable to the individual components that make up the GIS.
