The purpose of this technique is to provide a means of determining the severity of particulate contamination in fluid power systems. AS598 was prepared by SAE A6C1 panel and supersedes ARP598C. AS598 retained the technical content of ARP598C with more prescriptive requirements for the material used to carry out the analysis. The widely used technique has since been replaced in many instances with automatic particle counters (APC) but remains a proven, accurate and reliable technique. This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines the materials, apparatus and procedure for sizing and counting of particulate contamination, 5 um or greater, in hydraulic fluid samples by membrane filtration with microscopic counting. The microscopic counting method is capable of counting particulate matter in samples withdrawn from fluid power systems as identified by the 12 classes of AS4059 and projected beyond these for the five standard ranges specified and can thus serve as the primary document to determine acceptability. It is also capable of revealing but not measuring evidence of abnormal amount of water, other fluids, fine particulate and other materials, especially fibers and metals. It is applicable to all military, civil, space vehicles and test equipment.

This Aerospace Information Report (AIR) contains Lessons Learned from aerospace actuation, control and fluid power systems technologies. The lessons were prepared by engineers from the aerospace industry and government services as part of SAE Committee A-6, Aerospace Fluid Power, Actuation, and Control Technologies, and were presented to the A-6 during meetings held from 1989 through 1999. The document is organized into five sections covering systems, actuation, hydromechanical components, electrical components and miscellaneous, each further divided into subsections. The lessons presented in a concise format of Problem, Issue, Solution and Lesson Learned, often with accompanying descriptive diagrams and illustrations for clarity and understanding. Because of the potential growth in the size of the document as new lessons are published, those presented to the A-6 Committee in 2000 and later years are planned to be released in separate slash number documents, AIR4543/1, AIR4543/2 and so on.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides procedures for assuring cleanliness of sampling equipment, for performing the sampling process, and for measuring and reporting the sample particle count. The ARP gives procedures for cleaning sample bottles, when used, and recommends the solvents to be applied and how these solvents should be prepared. Requirements for the selection of the sampling point, sampling method, and sampling frequency are also specified. This ARP also recommends three measuring methods for determining the level of solid particle contamination of hydraulic fluids used in aerospace hydraulics. These are: a. on-line automatic particle counting; b. automatic particle counting method using bottle samples; and c. microscopic particle count method using bottle samples.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is an application guide for hydraulic power transfer units, and describes the various types, typical design approaches, their operational characteristics and limitations, circuit recommendations, typical applications. The scope of this ARP is limited to devices that transfer power between hydraulic systems and do so by means of rotary subassemblies such as hydraulic motors and pumps.
