This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) establishes the specifications and descriptions of the critical componentsand operational guidelines for the standard hydraulic impulse machine for testing hydraulic hose assemblies, tubing, coils,fittings and similar fluid system components.This revision to the AIR1228 provides a description of a system that meets the requirements for specifications including:AS603, AS4265, and ARP1383. This impulse system utilizes closed loop servo control with specifically generatedcommand signal waveforms.Data accuracy and integrity are emphasized in this revision. Knowing the uncertainty of the pressure measurement isimportant whether using a resonator tube system, as described in the original release of this document, or a closed-loopsystems as described in this release. The accuracy of the data measurement system and consistency of the pressurewaveform are fundamental to test validity, regardless of the system type. This is discussed in more detail in Section 5.The standard impulse test system is established for the following purposes:A. As referee in the event of conflicting data from two or more nonstandard impulse machines. Such a referee systemmight be built by an impartial testing activity.B. A design guide for future test systems being built by manufacturers and users, or the upgrading of present systems.C. A design guide for higher pressure test systems or special purpose machines being designed.It is not the intention of this document to obsolete present resonator type machines. The specification for the resonatortype machine is available in the original release of this document.A simple block diagram of the revised system is shown in Figure 1.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is intended to provide design and qualification requirements for self-displacing hydraulic accumulators. These requirements are intended to be included in the Producrement Specification for the accumulator. Those requirements identified by the use of "shall" are considered to be essential requirements; those requirements identified by the use of "should" are considered to be optional requirements for inclusion in the Specificaiton at the discretion of the Purchaser. In addition, test methods for production acceptance and qualification purposes are provided. The accumulator is intended for use in military aerospace hydraulic systems with rated pressures of up to 8000 psi (55,158 kPa) and of the following types as specified in SAE AS 5440: Type I: -65 to +160 °F (-54 to +71 °C) fluid temperature; Type II: -65 to +275 °F (-54 to +135 °C) fluid temperature. The accumulator is also inteded for commercial aerospace and helicopter hydraulic systems.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides definitions and background information for understandingthe physical performance, and test procedures of electrohydraulic flow control servovalves.The recommendations are confined to interface definition and input/output characteristics. This ARP does not restrict orattempt to define the internal characteristics of servovalves. As such, the recommendations are equally applicable tovalves having different internal functioning, different ratings, different physical size, and valves used with different fluids. Incertain instances, standards for valve design are recommended for the purpose of interchangeability, as for example,valve polarity, mounting bolt and fluid port locations.The ARP provides extensive guidance for the preparation of Procurement Specifications and for functional testing. Asample Procurement Specification is provided in Appendix A. The primary focus of this ARP is on four-way valves. Threewayvalves are discussed to a limited extent and terminology for pressure control valves is presented in Appendix B.This ARP is applicable to fluid power systems in all types of flight vehicles, and it is applicable to Military, Civil and Spacedesign/certification standards. Additional specifications or specialized test procedures may be necessary to define specialrequirements for specific control systems, and such considerations are beyond the scope of this ARP.
