The document classifies," illustrates and designates the various kinds of material configurations as well as the locations of needle penetration or passage illustrated as cross-section of the material configuration only. The seam types are divided into eight classes according to the types and minimum number of components within the material configuration. The components are termed as being of ""limited"" or ""unlimited"". The characteristics of each class are described. Each seam type is identified by numerical designation composed of fiye digits. In order for a seam specification to be meaningful", the designation of the used stitch type (according ISO 4915 = DIN 61400) has to be added aft the designation of the seam type.
