This recommended practice is intended for axles commonly used on Class 7 and 8 commercial vehicles. This International Standard lays down the dimensional characteristics necessary for mounting and interchangeability of the fifth wheel mounted on a mounting plate (standard fifth wheel, Clause 4) or directly on the frame (direct-mounted fifth wheel, Clause 5) of towing vehicles for semi-trailers. It applies to the fifth wheels intended to hitch on semi-trailers equipped with a: 50 coupling pin as defined in ISO 337; 90 coupling pin as defined in ISO 4086. Dimensions not specified are left to the discretion of the component manufacturer. Test conditions and strength requirements to be met by 50 and 90 fifth wheel coupling are specified in ISO 8717.

This International Standard defines a simplified and reliable check procedure of the mechanical coupling devices between light trailers, and towing vehicles, covered by ISO 3853 and European regulation (94/20/CE), which specify a dynamic test of mechanical resistance at the conclusion of which these devices should present neither fractures, splits, cracks, nor visible external deteriorations caused by the test. This International Standard is applicable to all the components of the mechanical coupling devices whose failure can cause the fracture of the attachment, manufactured out of steel, forged steel or cast steel (i.e. generally in ferromagnetic materials). In the case of use of other materials, the manufacturer will check their compatibility with the methods of nondestructive testing.

This SAE Recommended Practice outlines qualification testing and performance related criteria of elastomeric boot seals used in constant velocity joint applications. These applications are referred to as front-wheel-drive halfshafts or axles, but can also be utilized in rear-wheel-drive halfshaft applications. For additional information regarding CV joint systems and their applications refer to SAE AE-7 "Universal Joint and Driveshaft Design Manual." The grease type and grease quantities, clamps and clamping mechanisms of an assemby are critical and considered to be the same as OEM, service, or aftermarket designation. Although joint lubricating grease and clamping mechanism are not addressed in this document, they are critical to a total system performance. The purpose of this document is to establish a uniform practice for those in the surface vehicle industry that specify and/or manufacture CV joint boot seals (boots) for OEM or aftermarket use with respect to qualification testing for physical and mechanical properties. This document is not intended to include or address propeller shaft, Power Take Off, heavy equipment, and marine boot seal applications.

To provide a means of obtaining the performance characteristics of automatic transmissions and automatic transaxles. It outlines dynamometer tests that map the steady-state characteristics over a range of operations of an automatic transmission/automatic transaxle and provides a method of presenting test data. This procedure must be followed, with similar test facilities so that results obtained from different laboratories are comparable. For this SAE Recommended Practice, the transmission is defined as the complete automatic transmission or transaxle assembly between the engine and the driveshaft(s) used to effect a ratio change in transmitting power. For 4WD/AWD, it does not include transfer case or power take off subsystems. This test procedure deals with the aspect of conducting complete transmission and transaxle assembly testing. However, by its very nature a transmission should be viewed as a compilation of three major component systems: pump, torque converter, and gearbox (all ratio change elements). From a design perspective, it is important that the losses associated with each of these components be determined by conducting separate tests of each component under controlled test conditions that simulate the in-transmission operating conditions. Torque converter testing is described in SAE J643, and pump testing is described in SAE J2311. If done with strict attention to detail it is possible to subtract off the pump and torque converter losses from the transmission assembly losses in order to obtain gearbox losses only, eliminating the need to conduct a separate gearbox test.

Type A hoses are intended for original equipment or replacement applications while Type B hoses are intended for aftermarket auxiliary cooler applications only.
